Default What (percussion) instrument is this?

I don't even know how to describe that sound in the background... it's almost like a vibraslap...

David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World"

I have heard this instrument in a number of different songs before... if I think of another example, I will post it...

EDIT: Found it, this Marvin Gaye song, same instrument:

Exclamation Flute maybe?

I think it's just your tradition Flute, just used in a non-traditional way maybe

Suite For Flute And Jazz Piano Trio, Claude Bolling, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Château de Versailles

That was a very enjoyable listen, Sylentwolf, but I don't hear the same repetitive, "percussive" sound in the song.

The sound to which I am referring starts at about 0:16 in Bowie's song and occurs throughout the first several minutes of Marvin's song.

What I hear is a guiro, many types. You rub the wooden stick across it for that sound.

That's gotta be it; you are the man, Pat! This has nagged me (from time to time) for quite a while.
I'm gonna have to ask my friend who lives in Brazil about this thing... or if she knows how to pronounce that word properly.

And I gotta say, are you sure that thing you posted couldn't be used for, uh, other purposes?

Pleasure Wilky, that's what I heard anyways. Probably pronounced differently that we think.

As for other uses, heu, really?

Edit: By the way, not as easy as it might look to play, to continually hit it right without screwing up ain't for me.

I knew the sound but couldn't recall the name. Best I could find was rhythm sticks, where one or both have ridges like the ones in this amazon link.

My friend says "gu:iro" is pronounced similarly to "guido." The umlaut above the U in Spanish turns gui- into a gw- sound. My friend said this:

"I didn't recognize it until just looking for some clips on Youtube and definitely recognize the sound. Like Wikipedia states, it is found in a lot of cumbia and salsa music. In Brazil, its called the reco reco (pronounced 'hey-coo hey-coo') and is really detectable in samba and pagode music. I've mostly seen wooden ones but I think some are made out of steel, maybe like this one here."

Great at least I pronounced it right (well my bro was the one who brought this in the band playing this when we did some Santana and similar type music).

Yes there are metal ones, some will come with more than one size on a holder, but think it becomes another instrument then.
