Criterion Tootsie (1982)

Tootsie Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:
New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary featuring director Sydney Pollack, taken from Criterion’s 1991 laserdisc edition of the film
New interviews with actor Dustin Hoffman and comedy writer Phil Rosenthal
Interview with Dorothy Michaels by film critic Gene Shalit, from the film’s production
Making of “Tootsie,” a 1982 documentary directed by Rocky Lang
A Better Man: The Making of “Tootsie,” a 2007 documentary directed by Charles Kiselyak and featuring interviews with Pollack; actors Dabney Coleman, Teri Garr, Hoffman, and Jessica Lange; and writers Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisgal
Screen and wardrobe test footage of Hoffman
Deleted scenes and trailers
PLUS: An essay by critic Michael Sragow
Quote:
In Tootsie, the character Michael Dorsey lands the role of a lifetime—as does the actor playing him, Dustin Hoffman. This multilayered comedy from director Sydney Pollack follows the increasingly elaborate deception of a down-on-his-luck New York actor who disguises himself as a woman to get a coveted soap opera gig; while his female persona skyrockets to fame, he finds himself learning to be a better man. Hoffman’s ball-busting yet disarmingly sweet Dorothy Michaels is a sensational comic creation, given support by a stellar cast including Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Teri Garr, George Gaynes, Bill Murray, and, in her first Oscar-winning role, Jessica Lange. Imbued with poignant drama, Tootsie is a funny and cutting film from an American moment defined by shifting social and sexual identities

Another New Year's cartoon clue ticked off the list. Not too many left now.

Nothing newsworthy, really. It's been known for some time now.

Still, I didn't know and am thrilled to hear the news. Was about import this from Germany, actually.

Yep, I've been waiting given the New Year's cartoon and the recent Sony-licensed releases. I've been disappointed every month when Criterion announces titles. Hopefully, it will contain the documentary and commentary from the Criterion laserdisc.

I'm assuming it will. And it will include all of the bonus features from the DVD editions. Nothing new.

Until now, it was all just a rumour based on a relatively obscure New Year's drawing. The NY's drawing also contained a picture of a deer, and all people were like: "The Deer Hunter is coming from Criterion! ", lol. It turned out to be a hint for All That Heaven Allows. Yeah, those devilish hints can be tricky sometime.

But, Tootsie is no more a rumour; and its fans should rejoice.

Hopefully, they will not use the LD cover art.

I don't frequent the Criterion Collection thread as often as some others do, so I didn't know this was a possibility. Given that I've been waiting a long time for Tootsie to come out on Blu-ray, I'm thrilled by this. Hopefully it comes out in November so I can buy it during the next sale at B&N.

I wondered when this film would make it onto blu-ray stateside. I'm surprised it took this long.

Probably my all time favourite comedy, but I've got the German release which looks fine and I can't justify the price of a Criterion just for the extras.

I had the Criterion Laserdisc. I'm glad they were able to obtain it again.

Wow!! Was just thinking of this movie as I bought it for my dad (on DVD) about two weeks ago for his birthday. Great news!

The November B&N sale is gonna be a good one, methinks...

The Tootsie artwork for the laserdisc actually looks alright to me. For a laserdisc, I like that clean look.

I'm not sure about the Tootsie artwork for the BLU-RAY. All that red looks warm, but the fonts used for the writing... and the cheesy snapshots design. Hope it looks better in person.
