Default Newbie... What to buy?? Help please!

I have ordered a new JVC DT-V24L1D monitor for my video editing work.
Of course it can also be nicely used for HD playback, and I decided I should get myself a nice Blue Ray disc player. I do want to playback 1080i and 1080p, I also would like something that upscales my current DVD's to the best quality possible.

In an ideal world I would even dream of a machine that accepts a firewire or S-Video in and would be able to upscale that signal to HD But I really don't know if that's possible at all???
And a combi of reader/writer is not availaible yet I guess? Any expectations on that?

What would you guys recommend to me when my budget is maxed at about 1000 euro for a very good player. Is the PS3 a serious player or is that quality not as good as a dedicated Blue Ray player?

Thanks a lot for all your info, I would really appreciate that.
Regards
Peter
