That's pretty neat.......especially since i just now got DirecTV and the HD package. I kinda wonder about how current that is though...

Good find!

Nice.

What about local channels such as ABC and FOX? My HD guide says they are in HD but only some shows look like it. The PQ of Football is lacking on FOX from what I have seen...

As a DirecTV HD customer I find this very interesting as well. I think it is actually quite up-to-date... the resolutions at least all look accurate.

It looks reasonably accurate and recent. It isn't 100% however. They're missing the newer versions of HBO and ESPN, for example, which broadcast on the same numbers as their low def counterparts, 206 and 501. From what I recall reading here in another thread, those are MPEG-4 versions. So, the channels in the 70's for those aren't really necessary anymore, particularly given they're MPEG-2.

Last time I was looking into that I found out that 1080i is never 1920x1080, but in best cases 1440x1080, more often 1280x1080.
And I doubt they're doing anything different now. Besides mpeg4 or not compression ratio is important and dunno about directv but dish does go crazy about compression.

Are you saying the ESPN channel in the 70's is MPEG2 and the one in the 200's is MPEG4?

Wow, that's fantastic- any chance someone's collected all of this information for the Dish Network HD channels?

For the time being, the versions in the 200's are just mirrors of the versions in the 70's; therefore, both are MPEG2. They do intend to move them to the new satalite at some point though, at which time they will be MPEG4.

I wasn't sure about ESPN but I did read here somewhere that the 501 version of HBO was MPEG-4.

Could be. I think TNT and ESPN are the 2 being "mirrored".

All MPEG-4 1080i channels should be 1920 x 1080. There is no more "HD Lite".

Mine is opposite. My Fox is great on football but ABC is bad sometimes and terrible when the games are braodcast SD.

How are you all feeling about the upgrades?

I have the H10 receiver and older HD dish so I know I need to make a move sooner or later.

When do you all think would be the best time for me to do it? Is DirecTV due out with any new hardware anytime soon or does it just not matter?

I recently got DirecTV using the HR-21 High Definition Receiver with built in DVR, along with the five LNB dish and I am elated with the image, the Dolby Digial 5.1 audio. With over 100 channels of HD - quality programming as opposed to Dish Networks offerings, I am quite satisfied and would recommend this without hesitation. [Jim]
