Just curious, My tv supports 1080i and 720p and it automatically sets to 1080i right from the get-go and I was wondering if it automatically switches to the best resolution depending on if it is playing blu-ray or games. say if i am watching a bluray would it automatically switch to 720p? which i heard is better for movies.

Well if you have either HDMI or Component cables you can go to Setting > Display settings > you can then change the resolutions to your preference by telling PS3 that you have either cable and then it will let you choose your resolutions, and since you think 720p is the better resolution than 1080i then you must disable 1080i by unchecking the box.

Oh yeah i know that stuff. I guess I was just wondering if the ps3 will automatically switch to what resolution it thinks is better for what is being displayed. i just bought a 32" samsung LN-T3253H and although it is not 1080p does it matter at that screen size? I sit about 7 feet back. (bedroom tv). The guy at futureshop told me that there should be no difference at that screen size between 1080i and 1080p unless you sit right up close like two feet away.

For Blu-ray movies, the PS3 will always select the best available resolution; in your case, 1080i.
For PS3 games, it will select whichever resolution the game "prefers" - typically 720p, though a few games will auto-adjust - Marvel: Ultimate Alliance comes to mind, which auto-detects my 1080p capability and uses it. You can force it to pick 1080i by deselecting 720p in the HDMI resolution settings, but it doesn't work for every game. Incidentally, there's no difference between 1080i and 1080p playback unless your TV sucks at deinterlacing, especially at movie framerates, regardless of your display. Even in the cases where it IS noticeable at all, sitting that far back on a 32" unit will make the difference completely unnoticeable even were your unit 1080 vertical resolution (which it's not - it's 768). I'd say 99% of the time you'll see zero difference between 720p and 1080i signals on your unit at that viewing distance - even if you're looking for it.
