Default Speaker Setup? (7.1)

Hey guys im getting a receiver for my dad on his b-day so he can hook up surround for bluray in the 'guys theatre' part of the house. Id like to take advantage of 7.1 in the room since its where i do my gaming but the way we have the tv/seating setup there isnt any room for 2 more speakers..

so my question, would it workout well if the 2 speakers were on the ceiling directly above the seating? about 8ft above the seats and 12ft away from the rear speakers in the 5.1 setup? or would the sound just be too weird? (i have no clue but i read that if the speakers are too close funny things happen)

i could always rearrange the furniture and everything would be Perfect but i dont think my dad would be too keen on that

thnx guys
(id post in AVS but they dont seem to enjoy what they consider repeat questions and i have trouble reading through 1000pages)
