Default Speaker Setup

I had a quick question about my setup for my rear speakers. Unfortunately my couch is pushed up against a wall and there is no room to put my rears behind my listening postion. Do I just place them on each side of my couch, pointed inward to where I will be sitting? Or do I angle them towards the center of the room. Thanks for your help in advance.

Are these rear surrounds for 7.1 or your surrounds for a 5.1 setup? If they are the latter, you want them on either side of your couch facing toward you.

If the rears are the fourth and fifth channel in a 5.1 set up, you'd want them to the side of the sofa and facing towards the sofa

If the rears are the 6th and 7th channels in a 7.1 set up, you'd want them behind the sofa.

In the 7.1 set up, if the sofa is right against the wall, place the speakers higher up on the wall than you normally would.

These are my rears in a 5.1 setup so it sounds like I should just put them on the sides of my couch facing inward toward the couch? I knew I couldnt put them behind the couch because of the wall and I cant mouth them on the wall because they are floorstanding speakers. Anyone have a sub they want to let me have so I can enjoy 5.1? Thanks for the help guys.

One more quick question. Do I need to raise the rear floorstanders up off the ground so the sound isnt going into the sides of my couch? Maybe placing them on a 1 or 2 foot high pedestal? Does that make sense or am I just overthinking it? thanks again.

how much of the speaker is blocked by the sofa? do you have pictures?

A pedestal wouldn't hurt matters, but it might look strange, and if you have little kids, they'll surely knock them over.

I dont have any pictures right now but I'll be taking some this weekend. I dont have any kids so knocking them over isnt a worry. And I would say about the bottom 1/2 of the speaker is blocked by the arms of the sofa. I have the polk monitor 60's for my rears and I wasnt sure if this would be a problem with the sofa. Thanks again

With the Monitor 60's if half the speaker is blocked off by the sofa, that would mean only your lowest driver is blocked off. If it is set up, how does it sound? If u feel your not getting the full potential of you surrounds, raise it up.

Thanks for all the input. Big daddy thanks for the polk audio source. I read through it and they have some great ideas on general speaker setup. Unforunately I dont have bipole or dipole speakers. All mine are front firing so I cant take that diagrams suggestions. I think from reading that my best bet is to have the rears facing each other and that they should be slightly above my listening position. I'm going to try and put them on some small stands and see if that helps. Any other suggestions would be great!

For direct-radiating speakers, make sure your surround speakers are facing slightly to the front and not toward you. The surround speakers are for ambience and effects. You don't want the surround speakers to overpower the front and center speakers.
