Question Avatar: The Last Airbender [Animated Series]

Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questions about the original series about the Avatar:

I have only recently watched this (with, sorry, a download) and I absolutely love this series.
Now, I want to buy it on home-video, but for now it's only out on DVD.
This might be fine for the way it was originally broadcast, in SD and 4:3.
But I really wonder, would there be an HD-version for BD some time?

Also, would it be possible to be remastered in 16:9?
Or would that mean they'd have to re-shoot the whole series in a wider frame?

OR, was there never drawn more than what's within the 4:3-frame?
It does seem like it was made for 4:3, unfortunately, as there never seemed to be anything "out of view".
And I say it's unfortunate, because the epic storytelling and the visuals of the events deserve a bigger picture.

Luckily the followup-series will be in widescreen, but I'll have to see what that one's like.
Maybe we could expect a release of the Avatar on BD when the next series hits TV?

Greetings.

I think I once read an interview where the creators were asked this question. I believe they said there are no current plans for a BD of the series at the moment. So for now, you may have to go with the DVD sets.

On the other hand, The Legend of Korra is 16:9 and should be in HD so there is a higher chance of that being released on BD. Of course, it hasn't even aired yet which means a home video release is even further away.

Oh, that's too bad for such a beautiful series.
When was that interview though? Maybe it's different now, perhaps?

If it was animated in 4:3, (which is my idea), I'd still prefer it to be released on Blu-ray in 1:33:1. If it was animated in 1:78:1, however, that's great! And the show really deserves a nice lossless surround mix.

I remember back when the god awful film came out Nick had plans for the series to be their first BD, but all we got was a new edition of Book 1 on DVD. It's a shame because the DVDs have pretty bad EE. I'd say there's still hope as long as the new series reminds everyone how good the property is and makes em forget the movie.

Well, obviously the original aspect-ratio is preferred.
I didn't mean to say that if it was 4:3 they should still crop it to 16:9.
But I just don't know what they worked in.

Since the series was broadcast from 2005, it was sadly still a little early for widescreen (and HD).
So this could either mean that it was made in 4:3 and only released in SD as nothing more was necessary at that time.
Or it was also cropped to 4:3 for the way broadcasts still generally were at that time.
But I'm afraid that's not the case as everything seems rather unaffected my cropping.
Unless they made it in such a way it's possible in both formats, so that for the future it could be released in 16:9.
They'd get a lot of props for that, but yeah...

Sorry, what do you mean by "EE"?

But yeah, I hope that the new series rejuvenates the life of "The Last Airbender".

Edge enhancement or, in other words, artificial sharpening. The DVD's chock full of halos even when my sharpness is set to 0.

Oh, that's too bad...
Getting SD instead of HD is one thing, but then I also want the SD-version to be good.
Cause I can still appreciate a good DVD, I've been impressed by some even after being spoiled by HD.

Well, might still be somewhat better than the download I have.
I mean, these are AVI-files, so not a DVD-rip, but still look pretty great.
There's some macroblocking and such things that didn't bother me.
Guess the DVD-version should still be better, but even so... :P

On second thought, there is not a single shred of concrete (or otherwise) evidence in this thread so it should be in the wish list thread. Every time I see it I tap on my iPhone or iPad so fast I am taken to three different threads before I get here, even though I don't like the show that much, it having a BD release is long overdue. It absolutely warrants it as an animated series that has been so successful and loved.

Well yeah, just the artistic work alone deserves higher quality.
But the series, even though I was skeptical just because it was a Nickelodeon-series more aimed at children, it impressed me a lot.

I thought I'd just give it a try cause for some reason it was intriguing with the whole theme and everything.
Then I checked IMDb and it has over a 9 there, which made me go like "Thát good? ".
Not that it necessarily has to be good for everyone because of a general rating,
but I kept on watching and it became so deep that it was definitely an adventure.

So yes, where is that BD? :P

I do not know if the chances of the series being put on Blu-ray is possible (for now my DVD sets will be put to good use ) but thank you for opening this thread and asking the question. I had no idea a new series was in the work.!

No problem. Although I actually expected a thread about it already, I couldn't find it.
I mean, I'd think with the popularity of this series and how many people around here can appreciate a good story and artwork,
it would be discussed here, but I guess there aren't that many people.
Even though many thousands on IMDb gave it a 10, 9 or 8 of which most are over 18. :P

I'm excited to see they're doing more with the series or the concept at least.
But I'm also worried about the new style and everything.
That's the main issue going amongst the fans apparently though. -_-

That because it was initially meant as a mini-series with even less episodes.
But they expanded it with more episodes.

Not sure if that would simply mean they cut the original episodes in half, or that they expanded on the story.
But who knows, maybe if it's successful they'll order even more episodes.

I believe Korra's had 26 episodes ordered, with the initial 12 being one season (and one story line) and the other 14 being the second season.

Also, I would purchase A:TLA on Blu-ray in a heartbeat for the sound alone. To hear the "Last Agni Kai" music from the finale in DTS-HD.......

Seconded to the max. I adore A:TLA, and I'm very pumped for Korra.

If Korra releases in 16:9 HD and they decide to BD that ish, I'm willing to bet the crazy sales (assuming the new series is as awesome as we all know it'll be), will warrant an A:TLA BD release.

I would lose my mind if that happened.

This show is amazing! I cannot get over how great the story is, from beginning to end. It's better than most live-action shows, and I think it absolutely deserves a Blu-ray release. Hopefully the Legend of Korra does well and that makes them want to rerelease Avatar.

Question

Yes, just to get back on this for a little:

Of course I'd want these to be on BD, and maybe with "Korra" they would indeed come to BD, maybe even this or the next year.
Then again, it could also take a lot longer than that, so I'm actually considering getting the DVDs from Amazon UK.

Now, it was mentioned before that the DVD-releases actually had pretty bad image-quality, or at least a lot of edge-enhancement.
Well, was this aimed at the US-releases or would it count just as much for the UK-releases or what's the story on that?
Cause I don't mind getting good-quality DVDs if it's the only and best release out there, I do mind if they're even bad for DVD-quality.

So what would you advise? Not sure if anyone has any of the DVD-releases here or anything.
But if so, let me know what they're like to watch in detail and all that.
I did watch them, the one time I watched through everything, with downloads which were enjoyable.
But maybe if they're higher quality, flaws would actually be more noticeable, I don't know.

Too bad that there is so much "Dragon Ball" on Blu-ray, but not this terrific series.
I mean, seeing the similar popularity or at least success and the type of animated series they are.
But yeah, again, they're probably waiting for "Korra" to coincide with...

Greetings!

I wish this would come out on BD. The show really is amazing, I've only seen the first 2 seasons or "Books" but it's already in my top 5 for best animated shows of all time. Great writing, and great characters.

It's too bad the live action movie was so mediocre. The CGI and sets were pretty good but the acting and casting choices were pretty bad for the most part (among other issues)
