Default Wal-Mart and Joe 6 Pack

My friend has a wife who works at a Wal-Mart in east Texas, and he just told me today that when the HD-DVD players were $89 they sold only 2...TWO!!! I don't know if that was the trend across the country but for Joe 6 Pack, the guy everyone seems to be worried about who definitely lives in east Texas, even a $89 deal does not make him bite at HD-DVD.

Oh yeah, he also told me that there were two shelves full of the cheap HD-DVD players left. He went on to say that she sold out of the cheap HD-TV's they were selling (40" LCD's for $500 or something like that)

Why anyone would buy an HDTV w/o a Blu-ray/HD DVD player is beyond me. My friend just bought a Vizio HDTV for his XBOX 360. He refuses to get a Blu-ray player or an HD DVD add-on because he doesnt care about the picture. What I truly dont understand is, if you dont care about the picture, why dish out a grand for an HDTV? IMO many DVDs (esp older ones) end up looking better on SDTVs than on HDTVs upconverted.

FYI: he refuses to get the 40 GB PS3 because, according to him, "PS3 sucks."

It makes sense to not want to pay for HD, but he already paid for HD. He bought an HDTV. I completely understand people who dont want to or cant afford to get HD, but why somone who has the money would buy an HDTV and not buy the machine that will produce the HD picture is beyond me. SD looks terrible on HDTVs, even upconverts can look pretty abysmal.

If your not prepared to dive into the HD market or dont have the money to do so then dont. But getting an HDTV withought a Blu-ray/HD DVD player is like getting a car and never putting gas in it, you might as well keep your bicycle.

Shrug. Not all did. Despite the doom and gloom attitude around here, most people in the general public simply don't care about firesales of a product who's fate has not been decided yet.

I still don't understand why people panicked so hard about these firesales.

Ya, there is cable and standard HD digital broadcasts, sadly he will not be getting HD cable even though he is a cable subscriber. He will only use over the air HD signals.

Nonetheless, IMO HD broadcasts arent all that great, they suffer from many compression artifacts and have poor audio. They do look better than upconverted DVDs do. But Blu-ray blows them all out of the water.

well you pay a couple of $K for a HD TV in one big hit , then if your serious about movies and your buying blus or hds your probaly going to end up spending over what you paid for your tv in the long run your friend might feel that way *shrugs*

i do agree though if you do have a HD TV you should use for HD because thats what your paying for.

I agree that Blu-Ray has changed the way I look at my digital cable. However, it is enough for some people. Also, they have other priorities. I am learning that audiophiles/videophiles are cursed. .

If stores didn't sell out, then how did they sell 90,000 units? Then again this could possibly be their creative math ala Transformers.

All of people I know just want a flat wide TV. As long as they have one they are okay. I try to tell them about blu-ray but they don't want to hear it. Regular TV is okay for them.

The ultimate proof, one way or another, will be found in future media sales numbers.

This to me is ultimately funny. They tout 90,000 like it's a big deal, when Blu-Ray players are selling in the hundreds of thousands every month.

Even using Toshiba's own made up number of "20% of PS3s used for Blu-Rays" this firesale made it so they barely outsold the Blu-Ray players...for one month. How is a product no longer in production going to continue the "momentum"?

All this means is that there are going to be 90,000 pissed off consumers when HD-DVD goes the way of Laserdisk.
