Who else preferred how DVDs looked on their old tube TVs over their HDTVs - Blu-ray Forum

I hear people saying over and over that upconverted DVDs look really good and way better than before. Now I love Blu-ray and I love the way it looks, but I still think my DVDs looked better on my old Tube TV over my HDTV. What do you guys think?

Let me elaborate. My Deadwood DVDs look better on my HDTV but my Angel DVDs looked better on my SDTV, anyone know why?

No idea. My brother-in-law has a 61" samsung dlp and sd looks poor on it. My RPTV (I know, time to upgrade) looks smooth on SD and great on HD.

The benefit of his is the brightness.

I think it depends on the title. The Star Wars movies, and most newer movies, look better on my LCD. The "Saving Private Ryan" DVD looks almost 3D on my LCD.

Oddly, I compared the new Blu-ray release of "Eyes Wide Shut" to the DVD, and other than seeing more film grain, I didn't see that much of an improvement.

my old tube looked fantastic (was hd). current t.v. looks great only exception is the blacks aren't as nice but it is bigger and is the gathering point for the neighborhood. that being said, i think dvd's look a bit better on my current set. my other set had a super fine pitch comb which was phenomenal and helped a lot for scaling but i think the scaler in the current set is better.

Maybe could be because Angel could be edited on 60i? (WickyWoo is the person to ask

I don't own Angel dvds yet) If it is, then the deinterlacing to HDTV might not be being done correctly, while the 480i of course runs fine on an interlaced NTSC CRT.

Well, I guess in a way they looked sharper, because me old TV was a fraction of the size of my HDTV. And I wasn't yet jaded by blu-rays.

comes down to scaling quality. with a video processor dvd can look pretty stunning on a HDTV set.
however with poor scaling dvd can look like cack on a HDTV. it really depends on how well the scaling implementation was done. HD projectors look pretty stunning with DVD but they tend to have great scaling due to the image size required, poor scaling just would not work.

but looking at the pq of spiderman3 vs the sddvd
no contest. come on guys
if the studios have the disc done right there no way a sddvd can come close.
ill stick with hdm.
if hdm takes off like i hope it will, sddvd will go the way of every other format has gone.
it is a fact in the last year sddvd sales are at a alltime low.

maybe im wrong but i think hes saying SD DVD looks better on a tube tv compared to SD DVD on a HDTV. not that SD DVD upscaled looks better than blu ray.

I think the only reason why someone would like their old tv more is because its so much smaller therefore harder to see all the details (or lack thereof)

Angel was edited SD video until season 3 (I'm not sure if it was whole or part of the season) the year they went wide on the broadcasts. So yes check out how seasons 4 and 5 look to you and report back

My old tube tv was great in it's day but it was still 4:3 and there's no way I think anything looked better in that abomination of a format. Even my old b/w dvds look better on my Mits.

Just turn down the sharpness on your HDTV a bit and they will look better than CRT any day.

Earlier this year, I discarded a RCA 27" tube that served me well and still worked perfectly. At the time, I stopped buying dvds even though I wasn't into HDM as yet. All I knew was that my hidef cable was superior. I saw a blu-ray demo and then everything else sucked. I sold my Sony hdmi upconverting dvd player and never looked back. I look at my dvds now and they just seem like a total waste of money. I now understand why people are into SACD and DVD-Audio. If HDM never takes off, I will be one of those niche folks.

I think that some of you guys are looking at those tubes and it rekindles the feeling you got when you first bought them. It's like your favorite underpants that really need to go. It's okay!
