Fade In is the Burt Reynolds movie shot in 1967 at the same time as Blue and shelved by Paramount after it did poorly at test screenings. The movie would eventually show up on The CBS Late Movie on November 8, 1973. The CBS Late Movie airing would have been cut or censored due to the nude scenes in the movie.

Some background information on Blue and Fade In from a Los Angeles Times article published on July 30, 1967:

Since there isn't much information about the movie on the Internet, I've gone through Variety's digital archive and created a timeline of events that led to the movie being sold to television in 1973:

June 26, 1967 (Daily Variety) - The movie is announced.

June 29, 1967 (Daily Variety) - The cast is announced.

July 7, 1967 (Daily Variety) - Production was started in Moab, Utah, on July 6.

July 10, 1967 (Daily Variety) - Composer Kenneth Lauber is hired to write the score and title song.

August 9, 1967 (Daily Variety) - Production moves to Los Angeles to shoot the remaining scenes.

August 23, 1967 (Variety) - Production is completed.

September 8, 1967 (Daily Variety) - Paramount places an advertisement for the movie in Variety.

October 11, 1967 (Variety) - Producer Judd Bernard says the movie will be ready for previewing in December.

April 3, 1968 (Variety) - Variety interviews producer Judd Bernard about the movie. He says the first test screening in January at a movie theater in Westwood, Los Angeles, California, was "disastrous". As a result, the movie will be restructured, scenes will be cut, and it will be rescored.

April 10, 1968 (Daily Variety) - Composer Manos Hatzidakis is hired to rescore movie.

April 25, 1968 (Daily Variety) - Composer Manos Hatzidakis quits.

July 17, 1968 (Variety) - Variety interviews Burt Reynolds about the movie and he doesn't hold anything back.

January 9, 1969 (Daily Variety) - Paramount says the movie will now be released in the spring.

February 5, 1969 (Variety) - A second and third test screening is conducted. Paramount is still deciding what to do with the movie. They are thinking about giving it a theatrical release only overseas, shelving it, or selling it to television. The "Friedman" mentioned in the article is Joseph Friedman, vice president of the marketing department at Paramount.

November 7, 1973 (Variety) - Variety reports that CBS will show the movie on November 8.

Silver-screen icons Burt Reynolds (The Longest Yard) and Barbara Loden (Wanda) shine in this offbeat romantic western about opposites who attract while living through the hurly-burly schedule of a film shoot. Arriving in Moab, Utah, to work as an editor on a Hollywood movie, a young city woman (Loden) surprises herself and everyone else when she finds herself falling for a handsome and charismatic ranch hand (Reynolds) who is working as a driver during the production. Initially drawn together by the “anything goes” sense of location shooting, the pair quickly discover that despite their differences they are forging a serious connection. But are they going to make it past the final reel? Beautifully shot by ace cinematographer William Fraker (Rosemary’s Baby), this unique, genre-blurring film documents the real-life making of the cult western Blue (1968), starring Terence Stamp, Joanna Pettet, Ricardo Montalban and Sally Kirkland. Fade In was directed by Jud Taylor, but became the first film credited to Alan Smithee, the pseudonym initially created for Death of a Gunfighter (1969). Officially premiering as The CBS Late Movie in 1973, Fade In—also known as Iron Cowboy—has since garnered a cult following for its glowing star performances and fascinating behind-the-scenes look into late-sixties Hollywood filmmaking.

Extras:
  • 2021 HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan
  • NEW Audio Commentary by Entertainment Journalists/Authors Bryan Reesman and Max Evry
  • Optional English Subtitles

I pre-ordered this back in August before it was moved to January. The film is not great but Burt Reynolds and I'm in.

Kino never released Blue but Imprint has come to our rescue. They are releasing a 3 disc set with Blue, Fade In, and the new Cruel, Usual, Necessary: The Passion Of Silvio Narizzano documentary:

Quote:
Blue (1968) – Imprint Collection #430

Silvio Narizzano directs this thrilling Western starring Terence Stamp (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), Joanna Pettet (Casino Royale 1967), Karl Malden (A Streetcar Named Desire), Ricardo Montalbán (The Naked Gun), and Stathis Giallelis.

A Mexican bandit, part of a gang led by his father, goes on a raid into the U.S. He falls for a beautiful woman and decides to leave his life of crime and settle down with her. Eventually his father and the gang come back for him, and he finds himself torn between his love for the woman and his loyalty to his father and his fellow gang members.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • 1080p High-definition presentation on Blu-ray

Fade In (1973) – Imprint Collection #431

Burt Reynolds stars as Rob, a cowboy who is enlisted to work on a large period Western film (Blue) shooting in his hometown in rural Utah. He falls in with assistant editor Jean (Barbara Loden), and their chemistry quickly spirals into a difficult romantic entanglement.

This powerful drama utilises footage from the filming of Blue, sharing landscapes and brief uncredited appearances from Blue actors, creating a fascinating coupling of two truly unique films.

Though shot in 1967, Fade In was not released until 1973, relegated to a television debut after studio executives chose to shelve the completed film, and director Jud Taylor replaced his name with Alan Smithee.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • 1080p High-definition presentation on Blu-ray
  • NEW Audio Commentary by film historians Nat Segaloff and Daniel Kremer
  • Interview with producer Judd Bernard, by writer/director Geoffrey Freedman
