Default What if every movie were released on blu ray just once?

I love certain collector's editions and blu ray re releases when they are worth it, but I wonder: If all movies just had a single blu ray release with no reissues or re releases, do you think that by now we would have every single movie and tv show on blu ray? Re releases are great , but sometimes I think that a lot of movies just stay in limbo and are never released on blu ray.

This would like Heaven, in my opinion.

I like simplicity.

This idea would likely have little or no effect on the ability of studios to restore certain films to suitable standards for high definition presentations, though.

Studios go where the money is, and the simple truth is that there's more money in a re-release of a popular title than there ever will be in an obscure or esoteric title making its debut.

That would be great, every movie once, instead of the same X-men discs released 50 different times with a new slipcover.

I think I'll take what we have now, however frustrating it is that not everything is available, over a scenario where we're stuck with old masters and encodes for movies across the board. One of my favorite aspects of this hobby is watching a new release of a beloved movie that addresses major issues of previous releases.

That's pretty much what I've been hoping for, but it'll never happen. Certain films will never get a release for whatever reasons.

But that's not fair to, say, people that started buying blu-rays 5 years after you did, because then the release you bought today could be out of stock/print. And there would still be tons of films not released because the people putting their money into it don't believe there is enough of a market for those titles to justify their expense.

Imagine if every movie was released and all had slipcovera and a steel book? This site would be all crickets. Except for the complaining in Star Wars threads.

Universal would have to release other movies besides The Fast and the Furious.

And personally, I wouldn't mind the phasing out of slipcovers. They are nothing more than cardstock that adds no value to the package and needlessly wastes trees. You're better off recycling those things.

I wish there was such a rule, but that would've been too consumer friendly

This is where third-party licensing comes in. It seems to have worked very well for both the major studios who have agreed to lend out their films and the indy labels who relish servicing a market that, while small, has embraced the idea and remained loyal and enthusiastic for the past several years. This is where the future of physical media is headed and I, for one, am thrilled it has worked out this way.

I don't think we would have had every single movie or TV show on blu-ray just because of the sheer volume of them that exist. We might have had a few more titles out by now but probably not as many as you'd think. I'm not a big fan of constant re-releases though because I do believe it draws some resources away from other titles being released.

Well, I suppose in the "ideal world" scenario of the OP, we wouldn't have had problematic masters and encodes to begin with.

As long as they were readily available at all times, it would be wonderful.

If there is an advancement in PQ/SQ due to technical developments, then I'll upgrade and will be grateful for a re-release, otherwise I generally won't rebuy a title. Many early Blu-ray releases now look dated and could do with a new transfer. I'll never understand why people upgrade because of a change of packaging and they'll only have themselves to blame for encouraging studios to take their money that way.

The 50th rerelease of a Star Trek film isn't taking away a spot on the schedule from Roman Holiday.

Look at how many well known titles have wound up with, say Twilight Time and limited to 3,000 copies. Would they have even gotten a release otherwise?

So I don't really think one fewer version of Talladega Nights would have prompted someone at Sony to say "Hey, why don't we release Philadelphia instead?!" They just would have released nothing.

And you talk about TV... TV doesn't do the repackaging and rereleasing thing half as much as movies, and there are still a lot of major shows either incomplete or never released. No one has released Burns and Allen, and not because they decided to repackage I Dream of Jeannie. Universal still has the original Dragnet locked in the vaults because they don't want to pay to make useable masters, and no DVD rerelease will change that.

I always see this sentiment expressed and it never makes sense to me. An amazing new remaster of a classic is even more exciting to me than an okay movie getting its first release. I would switch a generic action movie blu-ray to DVDs in exchange for a 4k remaster of The Untouchables, for example.

if they were done right to begin with, they wouldn't need a remaster
