I cant believe how fast Toshiba is moving with this HD DVD, sales must be doing well.

Definitely a product aimed at the Japanese market where recorders outsell players.

I'm not sure such a device will be a big hit here in the US where everyone loves DVRs.

yeah. Toshiba is trying to win the war by putting everything out in front so as to push out blu-ray. My guess is that they realize that since there discs don't hold much there worried that they won't be able to compete in the long run so there going for the early win to make sure that they don't have that problem. Remember its also much easier to manufacture hd dvds then it is blu-ray discs because the hd dvds are so simliar to the normal dvds.

Also, take note that this recorder is only selling in Japan, with only 10,000 units. Blu-ray recorders have been available in Japan since 2003 at 450,000 yen. So, for this player at 400,000 yen ($3,500), I don't expcect it to take off.

Yes but those Blu-Ray recorders are not compatible with todays discs. 10k recorders doesn't sound like much but we ARE talking about a $3500 component here.

Six uncontested months with Blu-Ray shooting itself in the foot repeatedly = 25,000 players for HD-DVD.

They're doing great. Why don't you buy one of these and tell us how it goes for you.

I simpl was suggesting:

Why not buy one of these Toshiba recorders and let us know how it goes.

You couldn't understand that?

Smile Blu-ray drive

There are not available in the United States as yet, and I am not interested in one anyway. What I will be getting is a Blu-ray drive for my computer (when it can play BD's).

Probably a better choice.

Next time I try some DIY PC project, I may have to hit up one of those myself.

The 25k is "estimated"

I'm not banking on any numbers that have "estimated" preceding them.

It looks like a pretty credible source to me.

In fact, I don't know how you could do better:

Quote:
According to the company's initial press blurb, "Toshiba's latest players are poised to continue momentum
generated by the success of the HD-A1 and HD-XA1 models, which are estimated to be in approximately 25,000 U.S. homes already."
"The company" being Toshiba themselves. I'd say 25,000 is probably a fairly decent estimate.

This does not bother me anymore. They (players) are all the same. The early adopters who have the first gen Tosh will never buy another Tosh, the ones who dont will get straight BD player/recorder.
