Disney Moana 2 (2024) [No 3D Blu-ray] [Digital only - AVP]

Today Wednesday February 7th 2024 Disney announced a sequel to the 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios film Moana the sequel was originally commissioned to be a tv series continuation to Moana to be released on Disney+ this year but was Disney CEO Bob Iger was so impressed by the story being made for the Moana tv series he deemed it to good for a streaming only tv series and the series was refashioned into a sequel.

Quoted below is the official Disney movie announcement and release date press release

The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2, Disney Animation’s all-new feature-length sequel to 2016’s Oscar-nominated film, will be released in theaters in 2024.

“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic, all-new animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.

Added below is the first look teaser trailer

Disney’s Moana 2 releases in theaters November 27th 2024 and since
all Disney animated films are produced naturally in 3d since 2010 with Disney’s Tangled by adding a virtual second camera onto the original made cgi footage this all but guarantees Moana 2 will presumably be released in 3D

While it is possible that this will get a 3D release, it is not confirmed yet. Instead of making a new thread for this, you should've posted this in the Upcoming 3D Movies thread linked below:

The damage is done now.

In any case it's fairly safe to assume that Disney will release this in 3D but not on 3D Blu-ray - cue the same AVP discussion that's in every Disney thread at the moment...

Just read the article on CNN. I sure hope this gets a 3D bluray release. But...not holding my breath.

Interesting announcement. Sequel coming out 6 months before the live action remake of the first movie comes out.

I mean if TLM didn't get one this seems hopeless, barring Disney having a change of heart and letting a Turbine or something get their movies. I do very much support leaving it an open question though until all regions with releases have announced their releases.

If only it was an open question but sadly you are right, it is hopeless unless something changes at Disney. If they keep losing money something will have to change but as things stand it is safe to assume this will have no 3D Blu-ray and that's assuming it gets a 3D release at all, considering it was developed for television.

This probably won't get a Blu-ray 3D release, only an AVP one.

That goes for every Disney animated title.

Moana 1 blu ray 3D, very nice medium layers of 3D. I liked the movie.

I hear this prequel/sequel or what it might be, is not going to bring back the female star of the prior film. I guess they have a different story without her, unless it's when she's a different age. Probably a few years before it's ready.

Two separate movies. She won't be in the Live Action remake of the the first Moana and a new actress has already been cast. She will be reprising her role in the Animated sequel Moana 2. The two movies are currently coming out about 6 months apart.

My wife is so excited about this. Moana is her favourite movie. She saw an ad for it and was yelling that it's in 3D.

The native 3D presentation of Moana 2 is natural and very comfortable, as usual for Disney animation... basically flawless but it could have been stronger. There are a few stand-out moments, but it doesn't draw much attention to itself. The animation as a whole is dazzling, however the story and songs didn't grab me all that much.

Like Wish last year, the Stereoscopic Supervisor and Stereo Production Supervisor credits pop out. I love those details! Well done, kudos to Katie A. Fico & Brandi Stone.

Thanks for your 3D review, Xenago. The 3D sounds very much like the first film, Moana 1, which has mostly medium 3D layers. Good but very uneventful most times compared to stronger 3D as you said. The scene climbing the cliff looks good in 1, but could've been amazing in strong 3D.

I wonder if this movie is more of the same, where she sails most of the film out at sea before finally facing the final battle.

This one is bigger and better in almost every conceivable way. The scope is way bigger than the first one, and there are more supporting characters.

Do they spend a lot of time at a new location, or mostly out at sea? I'll check it out eventually, thanks.
