High quality horror film?

Hey guys, I'm planning on watching a horror film tomorrow with my girlfriend. I've seen the Scream movies and these were really great and seemed like high quality movies, but I want something scarier than Scream. I saw 'Sinister' and this was really freaky!

The Conjuring was scary and stuck with me. It's not a slasher though. It's a haunted house/possession style movie. It's best to watch it with a subwoofer, but that's true of all movies.

What about the recent one 'Annabelle'? Does the doll come alive and harm people or is the doll just present?

I'd highly recommend Dead Silence myself. I don't know anything about Annabelle, but it may be along similar lines. It is also the same director as The Conjuring.

I'm a creature feature or gothic horror guy, myself. I would suggest a Penny Dreadful marathon at the moment, because I just finished season one and really loved it. If you like the gothic, Victorian monster movie style you should love that series too.

I'm looking to get into Hammer Horror soon. Shame the blu rays are so absent.

Just so you know, Annabelle is a prequel/spin-off of The Conjuring, so it's best to see the latter first.

These top my list. Films like The Conjuring, Sinister, Last Exorcism, Insidious and other wide release theatrical horror films that get a lot of big buzz just don't cut it for me.

The Shining is the highest quality IMO.
Other choices: Let the Right one in, Exorcist, Poltergeist, the Descent, the Conjuring, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hatchet... These are a good start.

the terms "high quality" and "horror film" aren't often used in the same sentence, esp. if you're limiting yourself to anything after the year 2000... try widening your horizons
