Default No remasters of the Star Trek movies for the 50th anniversary?

So... does this mean a basic repackaging for the 50th? Disappointed, Paramount.

kind of a bummer but i can't be too disappointed since i got the original box set for $10... there was a pricing error on target.com and i was actually able to get BBY to price match it so that was definitely quite a score

As far as I know, Paramount has yet to re-release any film on Blu-ray with remastered/re-encoded video or audio in the US or Canada.

Even Warner was saddled with distributing Paramount's old stock and the special edition releases of Pain and Gain & Transformers: Dark of the Moon had the same A/V presentations as the vanilla releases.

So I'm not disappointed that Paramount is repackaging the Star Trek films for the 50th anniversary.

Except for My Fair Lady.
It'd be nice if Paramount used the original fonts for each movie from the posters, in fact the actual poster artwork, for 4K scans of the Theatrical Cuts. Though I'd love a 4K redone rerender for TMP: Director's Edition.

There's already a thread for these 50th anniversary sets. We discussed this at length there. The consensus is that yes, this is not a good sign at all for getting remasters any time soon.

I honestly don't get how a low price can make you less disappointed that the PQ is lackluster.

I forgot about that... but still its only one restoration since they started releasing movies on Blu-ray in the US and Canada.

Very disappointing indeed. However, Bill Hunt at the digitalbits.com stated in one of his daily Bits Updates that Paramount has very quietly begun production of some movies for eventual 4K roll out. Two of the titles specifically mentioned were Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) for release later this year. Per his January 28th update:

Quote:
A quick bit of Ultra HD Blu-ray news: We’ve yet to hear officially from Paramount whether or not (and if, when) they might support UHD Blu-ray releases with their titles, but industry sources are telling us that the studio has quietly begun preparing titles for release on the format, including Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. We’ll have to wait and see when official announcements are made, but I would expect to see at least a few Paramount UHD BD titles available in time for the holidays.
So (fingers crossed) hopefully this means they will begin re-issuing all the Star Trek films in 4K/Blu-ray Combo packs working backwards. I recall when the Star Trek films first hit DVD. They issued them from TMP working their way forward. Then as the format grew, they decided to issue the films in 2 disc Collector's Editions working from (at the time) the most recent movie and working backwards.

Time will tell...but yeah, all 10 movie are in desperate need of remasters (maybe with the exception of II).

I think you mean when the Star Trek films first hit DVD, not Blu-ray... and actually they went in reverse, then the collector's editions went forward from TMP Director's Edition on through NEMESIS. The two Abrams films in 4K will unfortunately just be an upscale of their 2K DIs. The same would be true for STAR TREK: NEMESIS by the way, which was the first Trek film to get a DI. Movies I-IX had cut 35mm negatives, so 4K transfers are very straightforward for the theatrical cuts of those (just as II was).

I actually sold off my old set. I found myself avoiding the movies because of the DNR'ed to death transfers. Otherwise, I think I would have watched both sets quite a bit. I got though the entire original series a few years ago and now just started to watch it again but this time with the original effects and audio. Too bad the movies didn't get the same TLC as the series did. It hurt a bit to let go of Wrath of Khan but maybe I'll pick that one up on the cheap when I see if for a good price.

Yep, you're right. I did mean to say when they first hit DVD. Thanks
