USA The Man from the Alamo (1953) / They Came to Cordura (1959) - May 12, 2020

Mill Creek will be releasing two classic Westerns, The Man From the Alamo (1953), and They Came to Cordura (1959) on May 12th.

Quote:
Synopsis:

Western Double Feature

Two lavishly produced Mexican war epics, The Man From The Alamo and They Came To Cordura make their high-definition debut in this star-studded double feature spotlighting the talents of Glenn Ford, Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Julia Adams and many more!

THE MAN FROM THE ALAMO (1953) stars Glenn Ford as John Stroud, a heroic survivor of the brutal battle at The Alamo who is branded a coward for fleeing to warn the local townsfolk of the approaching Mexican armies. He sets out to clear his name and avenge those who killed his wife and child.

THEY CAME TO CORDURA (1959) is a dramatic western set in 1916 Mexico with Gary Cooper as an Army officer accused of cowardice, sent to find five men worthy of a Medal of Honor. Rita Hayworth plays the shady lady accused of treason who he meets along the way.

I'm thinking more and more Millcreek has Cloak & Dagger. Kino said it was with another label which at first thought was Shout but maybe not. I just hope they don't release in a double feature.

Think he might mean the 1984 Cloak & Dagger.

I just cancelled my Amazon order for this a I could not confirm if it was a double disc Blu ray. Amazon said it was but blu ray.com said it a single disc. As long of a movie as They Came to cordura is, I wouldn't want it sharing with another movie on a single disc blu ray.

Mill Creek's Tech Specs page says it is two discs.

Just to confirm on the double disc vs single disc issue as blu ray.com has this listed as a single disc:

A Lyle Goff replied to me on an email i sent cusomer service at mill Creek.on the blu ray release of they Came to Cordura/man from the alamo release:

"As indicated on our product page, this title will have two discs."

It seems like MC are making some nice changes. Their upcoming Noir double-feature set will also be 2-dsics. These would have been single discs in the past.

Also, for argument's sake, They Came to Cordura is just 2 hrs, 3 mins and The Man from Alamo is about 1 hr 19 mins, so 3 hrs and 20 mins with no extras is more than fine for a single BD disc.

Wrong. The Mill Creek sell sheet mentions that both of these will indeed have subtitles.

Those who have seen these, are they worth $12 as a blind buy?

I thought about test driving on streaming but it's not available on any of my subscriptions, and by the time I rent I might as well take the risk and buy at this price, I figure.

Haven't seen Alamo, but I remember Cordura being a good (just shy of great) dramatic story about something . In this case I think it was costs of (lacking) honor, bravery, leadership...or something like that.
If you go in expecting a slam bang adventure story like The Professionals, you might be disappointed. I recall it being the skeleton of it being something like a forced march survival story around which the other themes play out.
Good cast, fine movie.

IMO, worth the $12 all by itself.

I watched about half of Alamo. Enjoying the movie so far, but the disc is sub-mediocre. No effort. Color and grain frequently fluctuates mid shot. Faces go from natural to pink to grey over the course of a sentence. My eye isn’t that well trained, but even I could tell this was a half-assed job. It’s watchable, but that’s about all you can say.

Kino Lorber is releasing Cordura tomorrow. Does anyone know if it's a different transfer than the Mill Creek one / Rita Hayworth box with many movies with pinkish cover?
