I think that's great, the Hobbit wouldn't have the same feel without Jackson's involvement.

On another note, I had no idea they were going to make 2 films out of it... that's exciting as it means much more depth to the story.

Hmmm. I sure hope HD DVD is buried by then. Imagine a situation where Fox has the rest of the world and NL is doing HD DVD ports for America.

Ugh.

Thank goodness for Japan.

This is fantastic news! Hopefully, the two-movie format will help to ensure that the complete story is filmed.

Here is another story about it. This one says P.J. will be the exec. producer, but will not direct it:

Well that's one way to get around the rights reverting issue, especially with the writer's strike on...

It doesn't say a two part movie of the Hobbit though, it says The Hobbit and a sequel to the Hobbit. I haven't read every single Tolkien book (yet), did he write anything in between the two stories (if so what's it called?) or are they just going to piece together a story from hints in the other books?

Default Peter Jackson to produce `The Hobbit'

NEW YORK - Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings."

Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after "Rings," despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion — an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting "The Hobbit" 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.

"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.

New Line Cinema is owned by Time Warner. Sony and Comcast are among the owners of MGM.

He's not the director? WTF? Let's just get Brett Ratner to direct to ensure it flops.

Terrible news.

I'm surprised they are doing 2 of them. I wish they would do something with The Silmarillion.

I am thinking this would make an excellent Uwe Boll project.

From what I've read the first one will pretty much follow the Hobbit story and the second one will fill in the blanks between Hobbit and Fellowship, so the second one will be based off of Tolkiens notes.

Why would they need to do two movies? It is not like The Hobbit is a long story. Maybe they are planning to expand the movies to include some of the other Tolkien stories. I am not a huge Tolkien fan like my brother-in-law (he re-reads The Lord of the Rings every Christmas) he has read pretty much everything, so I really don't know all that much. I read The Hobbit in the 5th grade (too many years ago to count) and The Lord of the Rings a few years later.
