Default speaker setup distance?

Hey guys, I recently purchased a new receiver, and dont know how many feet I should put for my subwoofer in speaker settings. Does that mean how far it is from the receiver itself, or from whereyou are sitting? My couch is probaly 7 feet away from the sub. Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks for any help!

I have always wondered if the speaker distance settings have any actual merit to them for home theater use. I mean, can people actually detect the difference in when the sound is released from a speaker between lets say 4' or 7' distance when sound is traveling at what... 750 miles an hour?

Well I just adjusted the subwoofer from 1 foot to 7 feet and does make a difference. MY sub still doesnt sound the same, as when I used to have a rug, I now have hardwood floors. HMMM. It just sounds like its pounding into the floor, doesnt give that subwoofer feel. (if that makes any sense, I dont know what else to do. I can control the crossover freqency on the sub itself, what is that for?

Just a question I have regarding distance settings. The sub being a non-directioinal speaker should be less affected and more difficult to detect in when the sound is released. Understand what I am asking though. Lets say you can choose 3' or a 6' distance setting. Can anyone actually "hear" (be able to detect) the difference of when the speaker has released the sound within a 3 foot span with sound travling at 750 MPH? Again, just a question. Not trying to make a statment.

The crossover frequency is the cutoff point for the sound the subwoofer will produce. I usually keep mine set between 80-100hz and all frequencies above the crossover setting will be filtered out so the sub is producing only the lowest frequencies.
