Jack Reacher should take the weekend. The first was a modest performer at the box office but marketing has been everywhere (also, it gets IMAX screens this time around). $23 million.
Ouija: Origin of Evil might seem like an unnecessary prequel at first glance but with Mike Flanagan as director and a 1960's look, it seems closer to a total reboot of the franchise. Also, it's the best option for teens for Halloween. $17 million. Boo!: A Madea Halloween is part of a tired franchise that should have stayed dead (see Blair Witch and other franchises Lionsgate plans to bring back) but it's still got fans. $16 million. Keeping Up with the Joneses has had decent marketing but really just feels like a dump for Fox (and the film itself looks like it came from a rejected sequel to Date Night). Also, none of the leads are really box office draws (though that could change with Gal Gadot next year). $9 million. And in semi-wide release, Pure Flix's latest dud I'm Not Ashamed. If this fails, it's probably the last we'll hear from this company for a while in terms of theatrical releases. $1 million. |

I have a feeling Boo! will be the biggest Madea opening in awhile, but I could be wrong.

Boo! Madea.
I'm talking about my feelings towards the movie, not my prediction for the winner btw. |

I'm torn on Boo! A Madea Halloween. I do think it will at least pull in A Madea Christmas numbers. The Halloween theme will definitely help. And a much-watched recent appearance of the character talking to Jimmy Fallon as Donald Trump on The Tonight Show can't hurt. The one reason I feel A Madea Christmas didn't do as well is because it launched when people were busy with Christmas activities like shopping on the weekend. It had a very nice multiplier compared to other films in the series. That's the only Madea I've seen theatrically and that was because I was reviewing it. But I'm interested in going to see this one of my own free will. I think it looks kind of fun. Stupid but fun. And I love Halloween so I like that it has a Halloween theme. I could see anywhere from 15-25 Million OW.

Wow, didn't think I'd be the only person voting Ouija 2.
On a normal weekend, I'd definitely say Jack Reacher all the way. But given how well horror was done at the box office all year, PLUS we are so close to Halloween...I don't see why this wouldn't win. |

I might have voted for Ouija 2 IF the original wasn't so poorly-received. Being the only horror option for Halloween is bound the help somewhat, but following up on a movie with a 4.4 IMDb and a 24% audience approval score on RT has to dampen enthusiasm - even though reviews for this one are much improved so far.
