I'm thinking about upgrading my receiver to either an Onkyo TX-NR646 or the Denon AVR-S710W from accessories4less. I'm only going to have 300 to spend, so I'm limited to these two receivers. I'm leaning more towards the Onkyo because I've had good luck with this one. I want to get into Dolby Atmos and DTS X, and I'm wondering if it would be a mistake going from my current receiver to one of the ones I mentioned. Just know, that I don't even use half of the features of my current one.
Thanks in advance! |

if you want ATMOS/DTS:X, you have these two in mind that give it to you within your budget and your current receiver doesn't support it, how can you be making a mistake if either of those give you what you want?
![]() I'm rocking ATMOS/DTS:X and let me tell you, there is no going back. good luck, keep us posted. ![]() |

There is no war. When we buy new AVR's that have Atmos, they'll have DTS-X, or it will be firmware updatable. Auto is a non-factor here in North America. |

Atmos may sound good, but DTS/Dolby 7.1 sounds pretty darn good as well, and I'm not ready to pitch my current A/V receiver yet, because it's too good to get rid of. I already have a Denon receiver (that's still like brand new sitting in the closet) from a previously upgrade to lossless audio, and surely I'm not going to have two. I was thinking about ebaying it, but I decided to keep it as a backup, if something happens to the receiver that I'm using now.

As for your quesiton, nope, no bi amping. You need a new Atmos enabled receiver, and it will have dedicated Atmos channels. There are a few different speaker configurations you can choose from. After you understand it better, you will able to select the configuration that right for your theater. Or you can post a question, there are a bunch of H.T. nerds here that will be happy to help. |

Pioneer https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=284242 Anthem https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=284239 Someone else mentioned that there's another, but I don't recall which. There are more AVR's that can do 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 with their built-in amps. They're the usual suspects, Yamaha, Pioneer etc. You've got to read the Dolby site's info and figure out what set-up you want, then you can start to narrow down your AVR choices. There's people here willing to help as well. Best of luck! Btw, Atmos rocks and you won't be disappointed. |

If I were you, I wouldn't sell that AVR if it has multi-channel inputs. You may want the amplification if you ever upgrade to Atmos/DTS-X. |

You need to do at least 2 ceiling/height speakers to use atmos/dts x and their up mixers and imo it does make a diff. in AQ with more speakers in different areas (floor, ceilings, surrounds etc) filling in all the rooms area to not just give you overhead sound but that 3d all around you sound.

They also make these little white tubes you can get them and Lowes/Home Depot. They have adhesive on one side to stick 'em to the ceiling. I took some pics of them on another thread, see towards the bottom.
With drywall ceilings, wiring can be a nightmare, so I decided to run these. They look a bit weird at first, but you get used to them. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=282466 |

Or, you can buy new floor standing speakers that are designed for Atmos. They have both the normal channel and the up firing speakers. The sound points up and bounces off of the ceiling. But if you do install ceiling speakers you have two choices: one is to break into the walls and ceiling to run new wires. Check with your local building codes, because you may have to run the wires inside a conduit, like BX. That will obviously require replastering and repainting. The other way is to buy plastic channeling that is designed to hide wires. You run that up the walls to the ceiling where the speakers are mounted. It can be painted the same color as the walls/ceiling. It will be visible as it will be a "bump" in the wall/ceiling, but it can look like molding. This is frequently done when people install a ceiling light or fan and don't have the wiring already run. |

I am running the Dolby Atmos enabled speakers on top of my front towers. I have a 7.2 set up, but recently changed receivers to the Marantz SR 7010 to experience Dolby Atmos. I have two Definitive Technology 800 speakers mounted 5 feet above my head. I currently have the rear speakers set up as height. I did not configure them as rear Atmos, because they were not in the ceiling. Now I am thinking about configuring the rear heights as rear Atmos speakers. I do not know if it will provide better sound. The sound from the Marantz is noticeably better than that of my old Onkyo NR626. I purchased several blu ray discs to test out the system and so far I have not been disappointed with any of the soundtracks. My favorite discs so far are Mad Max, Jupiter Rising, John Wick and The Fifth Element. I also purchased the Dolby Atmos test blu ray and have gone back to it several times.
