I watched the original British TV pilot to explain/setup the BBC-Cinemax talk show...Yes, "talk show".
(Which a certain Cartoon Network talk show fringe-spoof plagiarized within an inch of its life...)

Which pilot the US network version took at dopey face-value, and became the notoriously short-lived scif-fi series YOU remember.

I remember a then-unknown 80's-standup Drew Carey doing a frightening Max imitation simply by putting on a pair of sunglasses and grinning.

supposedly he was in a terrible car accident. all they could salvage was the head, and managed to keep it alive in that box. the space in the box was the maximum amount of head room he could have. hence the name, Max Headroom. that was the rumor in the 80's any way.

You obviously didn't see the mini-series/movie then.

It was a motorcycle accident, and Matt Frewer {the guy who played Max} his character's consciousness was downloaded into a computer, but the character survived.

At least that's what I remember of it.

In the talk-show pilot, as well as the goofy American version, the evil network wants to replace nosy reporter "Edison Carter" <Frewer's human character, not seen past the pilot in the UK version> with a virtual simulation--except that the bugs, of course, haven't been worked out yet...And after the "accident" in the parking garage, the last thing he sees is an exit sign saying "Max. Headroom <clearance> - 12'6"

When his scrambled personified brainscan first surfaces on the network and repeats the last words it saw, people naturally assume that was his name..."And he's even got a 12.6 rating already!"

Excllent sci-fi series. When they changed from the original goofy talk show format into a real tv show, a gritty, grimy version of the near future it was a great change. I think the slogan was "20 minutes into the future" or something close to that. Reg was great too. Love to see this on blu-ray. Maybe the group that put Buck Rogers on blu could do this
