+1

I saw I Am Legend yesterday and loved it, but there were only 3 other people in the theater. The last movie I watched in theater was The Departed. I waited for Bourne Ultimatum and POTC#3 and watched them at home in ~1080i and 1080p respectively!

Well I guess we won't ever met at the Starworld 20 then...

Like you, I no longer visit theatres. $15 for tickets, another $10 for popcorn and a drink. I can buy a movie at watch it in the comfort of my home and use the $'s invested in my home setup to justify it's expense. I can also grill a couple of steaks for "dinner and a movie", with my wife and have a much more enjoyable time than I ever could at a crowed, smelly, noisy movie theatre. I can drink adult beverages instead of watered down fountain drinks and if a bathroom break is necessary, it's a simple press of the pause button and you don't miss a thing.

Going to a movie theatre offers nothing of value to me any longer.

My dilemma is a little bit different. My wife and I used to go to the movie theater because we didn't have a nice tv setup (30" old HDTV, big bulky and heavy with comp only, no hdmi) and because it was just us 2. Now, with a baby on board and a big 50" plasma, its better to watch them at home. The only time we go to the movies is if we get one of the grandparents to baby-sit for us (we all need some alone time) and if there's a movie that is definitely watching at the theaters, like I Am Legend

I've got an 18 month old, and I know what you'll soon be going through. Pretty soon, you will be watching almost nothing but kids' programming. Disney Channel in the mornings, and Sprout, will become your best friends! Of course, after a while, watching Sesame Street or the Wiggles all the time, will really make you go insane. The best solution are the Pixar-type animated movies, which can be just as entertaining for you, as they are for the kids.

I have a 58" plasma, but I find it's really hard to watch 'grown up' movies at home, when you have a baby. So, getting one of the grandparents to come over and babysit, while you and the wife go out to a movie, is a welcome relief. All parents need a break every now and then!

Uggh the Wiggles, lol. My son is almost a year old and he's definitely into them. Its the only show which will grab his entire attention (why? how? ) and also he likes to watch some of the Higgly Town Heroes (song starts in my head... nooooo!!!! ).

We are realizing now that watching a movie takes up to a week now. A 20-min part on monday... 30 mins on wednesday... last on the weekend... and you can't really watch it too loud because then he wakes up, lol. But, having said this, I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I love being a first-time dad.

Default Cinema Vs Home Blu Ray

G'day BluMonkey,

I still love going to the movies as well as buying my Blu-ray movies. I think it's nice to get out and see them on a jumbo size screen rather than just on the 46" one I have at home. Granted the picture quality (and, I guess, audio quality) is slightly better at home it's nice to see it in the cinema with an audience. I love the atmosphere.

That's my 2 cents for you.

For me, going to see a movie in the theater depends on the movie and the occasion. If it's a big holiday movie and I have family or friends who want to see it on the big screen, then I like the theater. But for 99% of the movies I watch, I prefer to buy them on Blu-ray. Especially when the cost of owning a Blu-ray vs. the cost of 2 adult tickets and food at a theater is about the same.

Yep I agree, in the Uk Theatre or Cinema tickets inc food etc I could buy 2 movies on Blu ray and as mentioned above no mobiles or kids chatting

Just kick back and wack up the surround

My favourite movie is the fight scene in pearl Harbor with the amp up 2 1/3's

and letter box my screen instead of 16.9

The last movie I saw in the theatre was Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D. That is something I don't have at home so that was the only reason I went. I haven't been to the theatre besides that one movie in quite a while and I don't plan on going back. I've spent too much money on my home theatre and it's nicer than the big ones near my house!

I still go see movies about every other week.
But only becasue I get to see them for free.

I can usually tell right away if the movie will look good on Blu.

Wow, that's a pretty nice set up you have there.

Unfortunately I won't be able to afford anything like that in the forseeable future, short of winning the lotto or something. I currently have a 37" HDTV. I would like to up grade to a 50-something inch screen down the road, but that won't happen for probably a good while.

I do admit, going out to the movies can be a choir. My wife and I still go quite a bit, though for the past couple of Christmas's, my dad has given us $200 in gift cards to AMC theaters, so we still go often enough. We tend to go to the shows prior to noon on Sundays since they are only $5 per ticket and we stretch out the cards as long as we can that way. As a result, we don't have to spend our own actual cash to be in a theater with people talking, cell phones, etc. In fact, we only just recently used up the last of the gift cards my dad gave us last year, and we've only paid cash to see one movie in theaters so far this year. We're kind of hoping he gives us the same thing this year, as it works out nicely.

I swear it seems like the most annoying, talkitive people always somehow manage to sit directly behind or around us at the theater. It's as if they have some kind of special radar that directs them to a seat that optimizes the level at which they can annoy us. Watching movies at home is much easier.

I agree. And with Blu-ray offering better Picture Quality and not having to deal with crowds of people.

A night out at the Cinema with a GF or friends or even alone once in a while is very cool, I'd never stop doing that no matter how good movies look at home.

I do watch 95% of my movies in my comfortable home setup in the basement though. A mix of both options is best.
