Has Blu-ray won more than HD DVD has lost?

Not to be a naysayer, but with the exclusive support of Warner and Newline we have not gained as much as HD DVD has lost?

I mean, we did loose Paramount first. We have regained ground, but not in Dreamworks territory. Sure we hold the majority of studios now, but now what? Still no Transformers.

Things to consider:

* Is Paramount red faced? Oh yeah, red from shame and anger at this moment. I'm sure 150 green backs can't cover their butts now. That ultimately becomes 150 million pissed into the wind.

* Is Universal contemplating becoming the new Warner? Will they go neutral before jumping the bandwagon to blu?

* Are the RED fudders at AVS preparing Kool-Aid as we speak? Anyone take a fatal dose yet?

* Let's not become "sore winners". Just because we won doesn't mean we have to spit in their kool-aid and add insult to injury. Except to the exceptional few who deserve it.

Blu still had the upperhand after "Para-gate". If Warner had gone hd-exclusive, high def war could be close to split. But going blu gives blu an overwhelming advantage.

I say we are all winners, because as soon as Blu-Ray officially becomes the high-def standard by everyone, then we will get alot more movies

Well The Dark Knight will now be BD exclusive which I would much rather have over Transformers. We lost Transformers which sucked whne it happened, but I could care less anymore. The WB going exclusive is about as big of a win as it is a loss for them. I think that last neutral studio had a lot of power. One thing about the WB contract is they said that they'll continue to provide product if a big retailer demands it...so does HD-DVD still get new copies of Batman Begins, and The Matrix, etc.? I agree that Paramount isn't going to be kicking themselves because that $150 million put them in a great spot anyway. Will they be embarassed if they have to come back...maybe a little, but they got a great deal out of it.

WB is the biggest studio by far it has almost the same market share as Universal and Paramount combined. Yes it won't directly give us more movies that we would not otherwise have had, but now HD DVD has very little studio support and it can't go on for long. No one wants to back a loser, not the CEs, not the studios, not even the potential customers. This is BIG news and HD DVD is for all intense and purposes completely dead

To answer your question, an emphatic yes. Remember, the HD-DVD camp was trying to get Warner to go HD-exclusive. Even if nothing else happens, Blu-Ray won a continued stream of Warner movies that would have otherwise been in jeopardy.

More than that, they've probably won a position of being able to have future titles take full advantage of Blu-Ray's features. And the Warner decision has given the remaining HD-DVD publishers a good reason to consider adding Blu-Ray to their portfolio.

Since HD-DVD had less in the way of studio support to begin with, the loss of Warner will be a relatively larger loss for them. And indeed, it could be the swan song for the format. But just as important, this could give BD (and HDM) a chance to succeed long-term, which I don't think it had otherwise.

we never lost that 2:1 ratio. so you couldn't call "we regained some ground" both camps lost something, and gained nothing (but that will change when uni went neutral). but the lost the other suffered is bigger. we lost only 32 para titles, while they lost maybe 100+ warner's by may 2008.
also, they lost $150M.

and no, i'm not sore winner. I refuse to terorrise HDD or AVS. I just post a post in AVS saying about my presence only to read, not to post.

I know there are a lot more and some are very far away, but They laughed at us while we were waiting for Batman Begins and now we'll get it along with the sequel...which they'll have to go Blu to get that. Feels pretty good.

EDIT: Sorry Wicky...I forgot...got it messed up with Corpse Bride thinking they were the same distributor. Should have remembered too cause I was just at Disneyland with the Nightmare before Christmas haunted mansion.

To me Transformers is not that great of a movie to say HD DVD is still around due to that. I enjoyed Bourne more than Transformers.

1st movie is going to be the dagger in my opinion. And LOTR will be the nail in the coffin.

Not sure I made my point. We "won" Warner, but then again, we always had Warner. What we really gained was a market shift, and potential for even better converted movies on blu-ray. It was a great battle won, but the war isn't over just yet. We have yet to hear any conditions of surrender from Paramount and Universal.

I'm going to say for this battle HD DVD lost more than we won. It was a great turning point, but we didn't gain as much as if Universal went neutral. Then we would have movies where we had none before.

i agree warner was'nt a huge gain (it was great to get though!) but it was a huge loss for HD DVD.

The biggest gain for BD is market credabiltiy. The stage is now set for folks to get off the fence knowing that BD IS the way to go and in time ALL studios will have to support it if they want to make any money with HDM.
