Criterion Tokyo Story (1953)

Quote:
A profoundly stirring evocation of elemental humanity and universal heartbreak, Tokyo Story is the crowning achievement of the unparalleled Yasujiro Ozu. The film, which follows an aging couple as they leave their rural village to visit their two married children in bustling postwar Tokyo, surveys the rich and complex world of family life with the director’s customary delicacy and incisive perspective on social mores. Featuring lovely performances from Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara, Tokyo Story plumbs and deepens the director’s recurring themes of generational conflict, creating what is without question one of cinema’s mightiest masterpieces.
Quote:
New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary featuring Yasujiro Ozu scholar David Desser, editor of Ozu’s “Tokyo Story”
I Lived, But . . . , a two-hour documentary from 1953 about Ozu’s life and career, featuring interviews with critics and former cast and crew members
• Talking with Ozu, a forty-minute tribute to the director from 1993, featuring the reflections of filmmakers Lindsay Anderson, Claire Denis, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Aki Kaurismäki, Stanley Kwan, Paul Schrader, and Wim Wenders
Trailer
New English subtitle translation
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic David Bordwell

Hoping that the CC blu-ray will be using the same print as the recent Japanese release. If not, I'll stick with my BFI import.

I just purchased the import; don't know if I can justify doule-dipping for any change in extras.

Be interesting to see how the transfer compares, though.

It likely is since that was from a recent 4K restoration, just like this is.

Is this the first dual format edition for Criterion?

I think it's pretty cool that Criterion is doing Dual-Format editions. I usually don't need the DVD, but its handy for when I'm lending films to people, and Criterion releases the sort of films that you'd really want to share.

I know some people think its a waste of space and money, but I doubt Criterion will change the price that much since DVDs are very cheap to make.

All the November titles will be dual format, including the giant Zatoichi set. It should be a regular thing from now on

Wait, the 25-film Zatoichi set is also Dual-Format? Would that mean... like 50 discs in one set?

Nope, it's 27 discs. I'm assuming there will be 2 films per BD. There aren't any extras besides trailers for the movies, and the movies are relatively short (usually 90 mins) so 2, or maybe 3 should fit on a single BD without a problem. .

Why didn't they do this at the start of their BD releases? if its standard on releases now the old Criterion releases won't make the new one will they?

I hope the price stays the same actually. I have no problem with including the DVDs, and I'm cool with paying $15-$25 for a Criterion during the Barnes & Noble sales, but hopefully it's not at least $25 for everything now. On the Waterfront was understandable, but not a normal release.

Obviously that is getting ahead of ourselves and this should be more about Tokyo Story. I've never seen this, but it sounds interesting.

This is by far the best month of Criterion releases, but may I say 'Tokyo Story' is Ozu's best work. Defnitely going to pick this up day one. I see people might wait for the next sale but this movie is worth the price tag!!!!!

I was kind of guessing the same. I'm sure we'll find out for sure closer to the release date....which will be during the Nov. B&N sale...so it will be mine. A more than worthy double blu-ray dip!
