Default Starz' "Black Sails" (Season 3)

Did a search and did not find a thread.

I had a chance to watch the premiere episode about a month ago at work. Lot's of action, blood, plenty of scheming, nudity and sex. Hopefully it's a good enough replacement to the void after the Spartacus series.

Any other thoughts?

I may be in the minority, but I liked it. I'd give it a solid B. I liked the look of the show, including the scenes shot around the Bahamas and the costume design. The water scenes looked gorgeous on Starz HD. I read Jeff Jensen's review on EW.com and I pretty much agree with his assessment. It got a little light on action after the 1st big action sequence, but I think this 1st episode did establish conflict, which is most important for a show like this.

Neil Marshall, who directed The Descent and a few episodes of Game of Thrones did solid work with "I" IMO.

The highlight for me was Toby Stephens as Flint. Sure he may have been a little over the top at times, but he's playing a Pirate. I think he has the gravitas to carry this show. That fight scene at the scene was pretty gruesome. A little surprised that Billy Bones covered for him. I liked seeing Zach McGowan (Jody from Shameless) as Vane. This part seems tailor made for him.

at Long John Silver's visit to see Blackbeard.

This is an R rated Pirate show with some edge. Takes us away from the silliness of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Glad Starz already renewed it for a 2nd season to give the writer's time to develop the stories and characters. This type of show needs that extra cushion. It wouldn't have been fair to sit on the 8 episodes and then wait until the last minute to make a decision.

Yes I think they needed the action right away to catch the viewers attention. The Blackbeard scene was great!! And yes that fighting scene at the end was brutal.

This one has been added to my DVR schedule and hope it continues with some great stories.

Had company over last night, so we didn't get a chance to watch it, but it has been on my radar for a while. One of my most anticipated new shows of 2014. Probably will do a double feature tonight: True Detective & Black Sails!

This doesn't air in Canada

A shame because I was looking forward to it. Also odd too, as when Spartacus started up, we got that premiere the same day as the US. Boo

The opening scene was killer. Didn't think the rest of it was nearly as good. Not bad, just the opening scene was pretty great. I'll keep watching.

I really enjoyed it. Although the French *****s accent was terrible. (The one that was in Secret Circle).

It gave me such an Assassins Creed 4 vibe (for the gamers out there), which I really enjoyed. I love me some pirate swashbuckery!

Really enjoyed the first episode (I.), some of those open sea scenes looked amazing in HD! I might have to buy this BD when it comes out. Seems like they will have a ton of bonus content(like GoT), as they are showing quite bit already!
Plus how can you not be a fan of
[Show spoiler]"Blackbeard"
.

I was really hoping for a replacement of Spartacus, but it doesn't even come close IMHO. Bad casting and acting, mediocre CGI, but most notably a terrible, completely foreseeable script. The whole setting seems shallow and exchangable apart from the fact that we don't see a lot of it as 90 % of the shots are closeups of people talking, fighting or having sex in close quarters. The aesthetics seem to stem from an 80's music video, some characters look so ridiculous I had to laugh out loud. On the other hand everybody is so good-looking with perfect teeth etc. you start to question the expertise of the make-up department. If this was a parody I'd be fine, but seriously? I'm out.

Spartacus wasn't perfect but it had a much more consistent story from episode one and especially better actors, casting and characters. And although it might not have been historically accurate I found it to capture the setting in a more accomplished way.

Well, obviously your opinion. I watched the entire Spartacus series, and can safely say, that the first few episodes almost turned me away. Glad I stuck with it. As for Black Sails, in my opinion, the pilot was much more captivating that the pilot for Spartacus. I guess only time will tell how this series goes, I'm quite optimistic.

The story isn't to shabby either. I really enjoy some of the series on Starz.

I just watched episode "IV"(I love the roman numerals as episode name BTW), and absolutely love this show! I've always been a fan of the pirate genre, and this show is doing a great job with it.
Yes, all the main character have perfect teeth, etc...but this happens in most period films/tv, so I can easily look past that.

There is a 100% chance I'll be buying this on BD when it comes out, as I'd, not only, like to re-watch on blu-ray, but also see all the extras they might have with it. Starz has already shown some nice behind-the-scenes stuff already, as "commercials"(I've noticed other pay channels do this with their shows: Banshee, Strike Back to name a few) so I'm hopeful the S1 release will be packed with extras.
