I was really hoping for a replacement of Spartacus, but it doesn't even come close IMHO. Bad casting and acting, mediocre CGI, but most notably a terrible, completely foreseeable script. The whole setting seems shallow and exchangable apart from the fact that we don't see a lot of it as 90 % of the shots are closeups of people talking, fighting or having sex in close quarters. The aesthetics seem to stem from an 80's music video, some characters look so ridiculous I had to laugh out loud. On the other hand everybody is so good-looking with perfect teeth etc. you start to question the expertise of the make-up department. If this was a parody I'd be fine, but seriously? I'm out.

Wow, for a minute there I thought you were talking about the Spartacus series!

Spartacus wasn't perfect but it had a much more consistent story from episode one and especially better actors, casting and characters. And although it might not have been historically accurate I found it to capture the setting in a more accomplished way.

Well, obviously your opinion. I watched the entire Spartacus series, and can safely say, that the first few episodes almost turned me away. Glad I stuck with it. As for Black Sails, in my opinion, the pilot was much more captivating that the pilot for Spartacus. I guess only time will tell how this series goes, I'm quite optimistic.

I miss that show very much even though I did not love the last season. I have not watched Black sails yet but want to give it a go.

So, seven episodes in. What is the consensus? I am not watching and waiting for the Blu-rays, but would like some spoiler free opinions on how it's shaping up.

It's focused a lot on land conflict as opposed to sea. It took almost 5 episodes before we finally got some sea action, which was good by the way. They have IMO done a decent job developing a lot of the key characters.

I love the show! I would say my biggest stickler is everyone has perfect teeth and groomed hair.
The story, so far, is quite good. The main characters are pretty solid. Some of the sets are quite epic, and grand in scale. What I really can't wait to see on the blu-ray release are some of the great landscape shots of Nassau and that beautiful blue sea...not to mention(I'm hoping) some nice extras showing how it was made.
Very excited for this blu-ray release!

So, the second season has finally begun!

Love this show. The first season started kinda "meh", but the show was on a definite upswing, with each subsequent episode better than the last. The season finale was spectacular, though. And I loved every minute of the second season premiere.

Incidentally, I just learned that the show was already renewed for a third season. Sweet!
