Well, there was some talk of a 3-D re-release a while back of the original film. It turned out to be nothing more than fanboy dreams. But appearantly, a real remake is actually in the cards. The same people doing the sequel to Tron, Tron: Legacy, are in charge of the remake. Honestly... as much hate as remakes get around here... I actually welcome this one. Plus it means we'll get the original on Blu-Ray sooner rather than later, so it's another win win. One does have to wonder if the remake will retain the trippyness. Either way, I can't wait.

Disney is preparing another expedition into “The Black Hole.”

Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey, the director and producer of Disney’s new “Tron: Legacy,” and scribe Travis Beacham are teaming up for what is being labeled a reinvention of the 1979 sci-fi film, which at the time was the most expensive movie Disney had ever produced.

“Hole” marks one of the first projects to be put into development by new studio chief Rich Ross.

The original followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist, commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the robots are the remnants of the former crew and that the scientist has no intention of letting them leave.

The $26 million movie, which featured a menacing red robot named Maximilian and two smaller, friendlier robots, was Disney’s first PG-rated production and helped put the company on the special effects map.

The details of the update are being kept secret, though the take does involve grounding the story in the science of a black hole, much more so than in the original. Maximilian also would return.

Brigham Taylor and Casey Wolfe are overseeing for Disney. Matt Smith and Justin Springer are shepherding for Idealogy.

“Hole” puts Bailey, who is making “Hole” via his Idealogy cq’d banner, back on track after seeing his “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” project shelved by Ross shortly after the November reorganization at Disney.

Kosinski, repped by WME and Anonymous, is a commercial director making his feature debut with “Tron,” which is set for release on Dec. 17, 2010. Disney is high on the movie, which could launch a franchise. It is unknown where “Hole” would fit in Kosinski’s timetable.

Beacham, also repped by WME and Anonymous, came onto the screenwriting scene with “Killing on Carnival Row” and worked on the “Clash of the Titans” remake.

I recently read on the Dark Horizons site that Disney recently cancelled their plans to remake 20,000 Leagues. I'm thinking that decicion led them to go forward with the Black Hole. Since BH is really a sci fi version of 20,000 Leagues.

Actually, we just heard it's dead at the studio.

(As for "remakes", that's pretty much a name-only word at the studio, from the look of "Race to Witch Mountain"--
The original Black Hole is a pretty darn difficult movie to ruin by doing over but I'm sure they'll find a way...As far as Disney is concerned "remaking" it involves putting a ship next to a black hole and improvising Disney Channel material from there.)

I fear you're right, Disney has been very bland in the remake department. They make movies for the broadest audience possible.

It's a shame because The Black Hole could be a really cool with a lot of atmosphere. I think it falls down to who will be the director.

I believe McG was slated to direct the 20,000 leagues remake.

Think they said it was the Tron Legacy people, who basically see the project as an extension of the Tron redo.
("Well, it was, like the late 70's, and...it was the other sci-fi movie they did.")

Which will likely involve just doing Tron Legacy over with spaceships.
And like the "Son of Flynn" plot in TL, someone will doubtlessly notice that there were all adults in the original Hole.

(Also, since the original movie's script was trying to coattail on 2001, we can expect a less Weirdo ending in the new one, that tries keep things nice and explained, but sort of....feels weird, like the cool one in the original movie! )

Yeah, I remember seeing the ending as a little kid. It really freaked me out, as it was the first time I felt like a little speck of dust in the universe.

I'm with ya on that. I honestly don't care about the remake, as I'm sure it will be bland at best. But you KNOW that Disney would cash in on it by putting the original on Blu. THAT is what I'm excited about.

I think Hollywood's plan is to save money by not paying script writers and just recycle every single movie released in the 80's.

That was really good news as McG was the director attached to the 20,000 Leagues remake

I stated in another thread that I thought 'Event Horizon' was a close enough remake of it. However being the Sci-fi nut that I am I still would not mind a remake based off of it as long as someone good was attached to it.
