Cost of both players and media is keeping people away. Plus if they do not have a HDTV, why would they feel they need HD Media? Heck, most of the consumers that have a HDTV probably do not a home theater so they would not care about the advance audio codec's either let alone surround sound. They are in the "good enough" crowd where DVD is good enough for them.

Combination of things I would imagine.. $$$ for some.. for others, DVD's are just fine. Not everyone is into high end audio and video

Hmmm, I cant think of a better way to put this, so...
DVD was a huge leap from VHS (and betamax for people that had it) Because of two things. Quality and the actual device. Quality was a HUGE jump because not only was the picture/sound better, but DVD's would not wear out. Suddenly you could pause a movie, go get dinner and come back 100,000 times and your movie would never wear out. The DVD was a huge jump because it did not need to be rewound, was small enough to fit hundreds in a small area, etc. It was also a novelty. VHS was a tech that had been used for LONG LONG time. Magnetic tape was old school. Laser and discs were only a decade or two old. A laser disc that was smaller than a record was amazing. Blu-ray has ONLY quality going for it. Everything else has already been used to sell DVD. Remember, Beta-max was a MUCH better product than VHS, but they were both magnetic tape. Same product to consumers, so they pick the one that can recond longer. For the majority of consumers, at least right now, Blu-ray is JUST a much more expensive DVD. As for Blu-ray being too expensive, VHS copies of Star Wars were over $80 back then! Blu-ray, like VHS and DVD will slowly find it's price point at around $15-$20 a pop for new titles (1995 dollars). |

In terms of quality it was superior, especially by the time they invented ED (extended definition) BETA in 1988. It had DVD-quality video capabilities (700x480).

Why is it always so important what other people are buying? I mean what does it matter to me if my neighbour is using a VHS-, DVD- or blu-rayplayer? As long as I can see great movies like POTC, Spiderman, Casino Royale, Narnia, I am Legend, Ratatouille, and Harry Potter on blu-ray, I don't care much what other people are looking at. Most of the people here in Europe have never heard about blu-ray and actually it is fine to me that I have something that they don't. |

Initial cost of ownership too high and improvements over std. dvd only marginal for the casual user.

Have you seen those new Blu ray booklets? They really explain Hdtv,Blu ray and Upconverting. I have been grabbing them from the stores and leaving them all over the place. The more that know the better. I think everyone at my work is tired about hearing about Blu. But when they go to buy at least they will be well informed. |
