Weirdly for me being from the UK, I recorded the US cut from UK TV on VHS in the 80s. So when I got a "proper" VHS copy later on I was annoyed it was shorter. I imported the longer cut when the first batch of Kubricks came out on DVD around 1999.
It's my preferred cut as it was the one I watched the most back then. |

I've always liked The Shining, but I also thought it wasn't quite as great as it's made out to be. I finally saw the US cut about a year ago and it catapulted the film to masterpiece status for me. Better pacing and the sense of claustrophobia is heightened.

I prefer the longer cut.
That being said, both edits are amazing films. And they each approach the viewer differently. I don't think one is really "better" than the other. They are both great, and both are fascinating and both are compelling. But yes, if you force me to choose one, I will choose the long cut. They are both great. |

I dunno, the longer cut includes scenes that aren't necessary to the progression of the story and Kubrick saw that too. It's nice seeing Hallorann get on a plane and renting a snow mobile, but it really doesn't change anything. Neither does the doctor's visit, Jack's extra interview scene, the extended bar scene and Wendy running into a room full of skeletons. Wasn't the shorter cut Kubricks preferred version?

Longer cut all the way. Can't say I agree with Kubrick on this one.

I love both. But I find myself watching the UK cut more. I think there is one or two scenes I miss from the US cut when I watch it. Wendy finding the "ghost" party and the "serious *******s" scene...but that's just my personal choice. I have to say the shorter one is better paced.
PS: I grew up watching the US version. |
