In the fleeting summer days of 1980, fifteen year old girls Ferris (Tatum O’Neal, Paper Moon) and Angel (Kristy McNichol, Two Moon Junction) attend Camp Little Wolf outside of Atlanta, Georgia as an escape from the city. Coming from different walks of life, with the privileged Ferris at odds with the scrappy, streetwise Angel, the two immediately end up in a disagreement during their bus ride to camp which is only exacerbated by their lodging accommodations once they arrive, bunking next to one another. Fueled by their competitive peers, the two enter into a contest to see who will lose their virginity first, Angel to camper from the other side of the lake Randy (Matt Dillon, Wild Things) or Ferris to camp counselor Gary (Armand Assante, Gotti). Through the trial, the two learn as much about each other as they do themselves, turning a ribald competition into budding days of friendship.

Long elusive on home video, Ron Maxwell’s (Gettysburg) charming teen sex comedy/drama is an evocative, and often very funny, antidote and precursor to the more raucous (and masculine) sex comedies of its era, including the similarly loss of virginity focused Porky’s and Losin’ It. Glad to see the film finally released on disc, but making a mediabook a slip with a grey book underneath is such a bizarre design choice (I guess similar to the dust jacket on a book), evoking what A24 is doing with some of their website releases, but I wish it could show off another piece of artwork (like original theatrical poster.)

Yay, finally! Pre-ordered and saved an extra $10 with the 2024 Subscriber discount. That's already saved me about $80 since yesterday, so well worth it once again.

Some thoughts on the announcement...I'll use a spoiler tag when discussing the funniest scene because many have still not seen the movie:

The "Alternate Scenes" should be the deleted scenes from the TV version. I would have liked to see the entire TV version included because it has alternate takes and they had to change the storyline for TV (you don't even see the

[Show spoiler]condom machine

). Still having an audio commentary by director Ron Maxwell on the alternate scenes is great and I hope he discusses why

[Show spoiler]the end of the bus scene (the bus runs out of gas and the girls have to walk back to the camp with the condom machine)

was cut. It's shown in the original trailer and would later show up in the TV version. If it is included on the 4K UHD, I hope we get it uncropped because the TV version cropped out the

[Show spoiler]girls carrying the condom machine:

I'm the alternate scenes are 2.35:1 because they are badly cropped in the TV version.

I'm guessing none of the girls were interviewed because of the SAG-AFTRA strike (I think everyone except Alexa Kenin is still alive). Interviews with Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol were probably never going to happen (Tatum had a stroke a few years ago) but interviews with some of the girls like Krista Errickson would have probably been easy to get given how often she has talked about the movie on Facebook. On Facebook she claimed she lost out on the lead role of Flashdance because Jekyll And Hyde...Together Again bombed and claimed she picked out all the songs used in Little Darlings for director Ron Maxwell.

The audio commentary by director Ron Maxwell and the hour long interview with him should be great.

It's a shame the trailer isn't included.

The current HD master is at least 20 years old. It first appeared on the INHD and INHD2 cable channels around 2004 and then later showed up on The Movie Channel (TMC) cable channel around 2011. After streaming became popular, it became available to buy/rent on iTunes/Amazon/Vudu.

That is curious. Theatrical audio is listed as stereo on IMDB.

here's one thing I'll say about the VHS releases though

yes the second VHS release had an altered soundtrack and the early "blue case" VHS from 1982 had the original, but the blue case VHS was still worthless in its own way, as it sounded god awful

I can't comment on the second VHS but I do know the streaming master sounds significantly better than the blue case VHS
