...according to a NY Times video report.
OK, it's been said many times already, but, how about one more time with some style and humor? ![]() http://video.on.nytimes.com/?fr_stor...536d4642831374 |

Downloads are great. Do I want them to replace dvd/bd? Absolutely not. But if i'm watching tv with my girlfriend and I feel like watching something new it's great being able to log onto xbox live and rent a movie from there when the video stores are closed. Not to mention all the tv episodes I can buy and watch as many times as I want.

With the internet, ALL Digital downloads become FREE at some point, somehow, ALWAYS
so they will be the downfall of the entire industry if they go full force in that direction. As long as you have programmers and app developers to develop the technologies to transport and compress movies, you will have other developers and servers(people) dedicated to breaking it and giving it away for free. An hard piece of physical matter somehow holds more value in the end |

Movies only become "free" to download when they have been pirated.
Pirated movies on the Internet don't pose much of a threat to the movie industry because only computer geeks know how to search for the things, download them and organize the files to where they can be viewed on a computer or burnt to a DVD. The vast majority of people do not know how to do that. Many who do just don't have the time to do that. Most Americans never even figured out how to program a VCR and lots of folks don't easily overcome the learning curve on figuring out how to work that new DVR. The movies that companies like Apple make available to download are easier for regular customers to use. But the quality is awful. It takes a lot more than just "high speed Internet" for someone to be able to download a movie with quality equal to that of Blu-ray. Extremely few people in the United States have Internet connections that allow any bandwidth speeds in excess of 30-50 million bits per second. |

I prefer to own and not rent my stuff and there isn't a hard drive out there that is big enough to hold all of my movies. I figure if each of my blu-rays was only 20Gb * 90 movies (does not include multiple disc sets) that I would need around 2Tb plus room for my 300+DVD plus room for future expansion.
For music I love having all of my music on one hard drive and taking up less than 50Gb. But even with music I can go to Wal-Mart and still find a CD and take that home and rip it myself so that I don't have to worry about DRM issues with downloaded music. So, untill they come out with an affordable 200Tb drive for me to store all of my movies in high definition on, and I way for me to download and keep my movies (not have them for 24hrs then poof gone) and put them on multiple portable players, I will be buying physical media. You would be surprised how many non-geeks and the dumbest people out there know how to use google to search for rapidshare or use bareshare, limewire and the like. I know more than 10 of the stupidest people out there who don't even know what the difference is between a "computer" and a monitor, yet they have stacks and stacks of downloaded pirated movies and can tell you all about Kazzaa and torrent downloads. |

Anyway, the video was pretty funny. Hopefully, that general public will view Blu-ray as the second coming of DVD. Just much better. ![]() |
