Default Six reasons why downloads won't kill the DVD...

...according to a NY Times video report.

OK, it's been said many times already, but, how about one more time with some style and humor?

It's funny and very true.
But he kept calling Bluray DVD though. I know it's not DVD movies he's holding in his hands.

LOL... now that is the way to get a message across. He speaks the facts while being entertaining. Even if people find him annoying, they are paying attention.

digital downloads will never kill dvd because digital downloads is the most pointless piece of technology that it makes Hd-Dvd look good and that says a lot

Exactly: All the Pro-downloads have in their favor is a lot of vague "Isn't it neat-o?" with entertaining packaging, but no details...

Here, it's pushing the ideas we already know on the same Tech-Dope level that the Pro-download hucksters are pushing their idea to the Tech-Dopes, only on a For-Dummies entertainment level that the Tech-Dopes can understand--
Always speak the language of your enemy.

Downloads are great. Do I want them to replace dvd/bd? Absolutely not. But if i'm watching tv with my girlfriend and I feel like watching something new it's great being able to log onto xbox live and rent a movie from there when the video stores are closed. Not to mention all the tv episodes I can buy and watch as many times as I want.

Yeah, you're right. Downloads are a complement, not a substitute.

With the internet, ALL Digital downloads become FREE at some point, somehow, ALWAYS

so they will be the downfall of the entire industry if they go full force in that direction. As long as you have programmers and app developers to develop the technologies to transport and compress movies, you will have other developers and servers(people) dedicated to breaking it and giving it away for free.

An hard piece of physical matter somehow holds more value in the end

Movies only become "free" to download when they have been pirated.

Pirated movies on the Internet don't pose much of a threat to the movie industry because only computer geeks know how to search for the things, download them and organize the files to where they can be viewed on a computer or burnt to a DVD.

The vast majority of people do not know how to do that. Many who do just don't have the time to do that. Most Americans never even figured out how to program a VCR and lots of folks don't easily overcome the learning curve on figuring out how to work that new DVR.

The movies that companies like Apple make available to download are easier for regular customers to use. But the quality is awful. It takes a lot more than just "high speed Internet" for someone to be able to download a movie with quality equal to that of Blu-ray. Extremely few people in the United States have Internet connections that allow any bandwidth speeds in excess of 30-50 million bits per second.

I prefer to own and not rent my stuff and there isn't a hard drive out there that is big enough to hold all of my movies. I figure if each of my blu-rays was only 20Gb * 90 movies (does not include multiple disc sets) that I would need around 2Tb plus room for my 300+DVD plus room for future expansion.

For music I love having all of my music on one hard drive and taking up less than 50Gb. But even with music I can go to Wal-Mart and still find a CD and take that home and rip it myself so that I don't have to worry about DRM issues with downloaded music.

So, untill they come out with an affordable 200Tb drive for me to store all of my movies in high definition on, and I way for me to download and keep my movies (not have them for 24hrs then poof gone) and put them on multiple portable players, I will be buying physical media.

You would be surprised how many non-geeks and the dumbest people out there know how to use google to search for rapidshare or use bareshare, limewire and the like.

I know more than 10 of the stupidest people out there who don't even know what the difference is between a "computer" and a monitor, yet they have stacks and stacks of downloaded pirated movies and can tell you all about Kazzaa and torrent downloads.

That was funny. Only one person was watching him, and she wasn't even listening. What made it even funnier was that Microsoft had an advertisment on that page.

Much like you didn't need to really know the technical aspects behind VHS to know how to put some tape over the copy-protection tabs.

It's mostly the HD DVD fanboys who are pushing downloads.

Had HD DVD won the war, downloads would be the furthest from their minds.

Well yes, but that still didn't disable the Macrovision protection scheme. Did you ever try to copy a Blockbuster VHS rental back in the day? If yes, then I'm sure you know of the alternating picture brightness/darkness that occurred.

Anyway, the video was pretty funny. Hopefully, that general public will view Blu-ray as the second coming of DVD. Just much better.
