Default 5.1 audio problems with Blu-ray, please help...

My sound system includes a six year old SONY a/v receiver that 5.1 compatible (I forgot the model number), and my PS3 serves as my Blu-ray player. My problem is that so far both Black Hawk Down and Fifth Element audio are only outputting in PCM. My setting on the PS3 seems correct, and the game Elders Scroll IV: Oblivion is outputting in 5.1 while the blue light on my receiver that indicates 5.1 is lit. It's only when I play Blu-rays is when the sound is outputted at PCM even when I have the audio set to 5.1 from the Blu-ray disc menu. I still have the receiver set at "auto detect", and I'm at work now so I haven't had much of a chance to play with it. Any suggestions or answers?

I think you are selecting the 5.1 PCM audio option in the audio set-up menu of those movies. The fiber optic cable cannot pass the 5.1 PCM to the receiver, only.

Just to be sure, you are saying that BHD and TFE are not in surround sound, correct?

Yes, I'm not receiving 5.1 surround sound via optical to my receiver. Last night I remember setting the audio of the BD to 5.1 uncompressed. When I noticed that it wasn't in 5.1, I reset it to 5.1 surround sound. Still no go, no 5.1. But I have noticed in the past that when I set the BD to 5.1 uncompressed, there was still 5.1 surround sound. As the previous poster said, maybe I need to set the sound options on the PS3 to bitsteam because I remember toying with the PS3 setting just last month. So if the PS3 is NOT set to bitsteam it will effect BD playback and not PS3 games encoded in 5.1?
