I am getting a hum from my sub. It randomly comes and goes...anything I can do to make it stop?

I recommend turning down the volume of the subwoofer. Though without acting hearing the hum in action, I can't fully diagnose it, but my knee-jerk reaction is its too loud.

Check your connections, the sub will hum if the connection is loose. It will also hum if you touch the receiver end of the cable with your finger. If that doesn't work, then try a new cable. If that doesn't work, then you either have a grounding issue or a bad amp. You can try a power conditioner or a ground loop isolator for the grounding issue and a bad amp will probably have to be replaced. I would be inclined to say that it is your connection since the hum comes and goes.

I think this answer is on the money. An intermittent hum (probably mains induced) sounds like the shield has come off of a cable, probably the one between the receiver and sub.

Not sure if this would help your situation, but might be cheap enough to give it a try (it got rid of my hum, but mine was coming from the speakers):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KR2RM

"The Dayton VIT-1 virtually eliminates the 60 Hz hum introduced into your home entertainment system through your analog cable or antenna connection, and is usually noticed when connecting a powered subwoofer to your home theater system. "

Some people will refuse to believe this but my sub was humming and it was caused by a ground loop from the cable tv wire. I unplugged the wire from the cable box(the one from the wall) and as soon as I unplugged it.. Hum was gone...

If you have a cable box in your system and if it is connected to your tv or receiver try doing that.. How I fixed it was I already owned a monster hks1000 surge protector and power line conditioner. I plugged the cable tv wire into that and then out to the box.. no more hum...

I talked to a few people about this and they said almost 90% of the time that is the cause of the hum..

Absolutely right, the part I posted above (Dayton) eliminates the hum which originates from the cable coax. I had this issue.

To test if your hum is coming from the cable coax, simply disconnect it and see if your receiver gets quiet.

"Ground loop" Problem is that your receiver and sub are connected to the ground seperately and a small voltage (60hz) is passing between the grounds and being picked up by the main audio circuits. Solution is to interupt the path by either: the shield on the audio connection between the receiver and the sub you can cut away a short section of the shield at one end. you'll still get the shielding effect but not the ground loop. If you rather not chop up the wire yourself. you can buy cables with the shield connected at only one end.

If you hear that hum even when the system is off, your AC outlet that the sub is plugged into is not grounded properly - even if you're using a three prong plug. It comes from the internal amp in the sub. Try a different outlet and if it's the same, you either have several badly grounded outlets or there might be an issue with that internal amp.

One thing you could try, is an adaptor. Take the three prong to two prong adaptor - available in any hardware store and see what you get. If you still get the hum, grind down the wider prong on the adaptor and turn it over so you're plugging into the wall the other way around. If there's a ground loop, that should take care of it.
