Default What makes you upgrade to 4K if you own the Blu-ray already?

Do you only upgrade for your favorite movies or do you upgrade all your Blu-Ray films that come to 4K? I finally bought my first two 4K movies Cliffhanger & Die Hard since I only have them on DVD. If I owned them on Blu-Ray already I don’t think I would have upgraded though. For me personally it’s DVD to 4K upgrade, but if I own it on Blu-Ray I’ll just stick with the Blu-Ray with the exception of if there’s a great deal or if the transfer on the Blu-Ray isn’t that good.

I upgrade everything because a) can sell on the inferior BD, b) because they are 99% outdoing the BD by a significant margin. Even just the compression uptick is worth it for me.

The mastered in 4K discs from Sony would have been instant purchases if I didn't know 4K itself was coming, for instance. But why settle for gimped SDR when 10-bit video w/ WCG and HDR is where it's at?

Two conditions:
1. It's a film I intend to watch over and over again in the future.
2. Improved image quality.

There are three important factors:

-quality of the upgrade
-price
-appealing special edition/alternative art/digibook extras/steelbook packaging

with much less of an emphasis placed on the 3rd component.

If things are too expensive for the increased value they provide, or if the PQ isn't great then priority for buying that title goes to the bottom of the list. There are endless shows and movies to buy.

For me if it's worth owning, it's worth owning in the best quality.

Originally I decided I would just purchase new films and about a dozen older films (Just my favorites) I would upgrade from Blu-ray to 4K.....after watching a half dozen films in 4K, I immediately began replacing every film I own where a 4K replacement is available. Right now I'm at 100% switched over to 4K except where a title is not yet available. My collection is 60% 4K, 40% BLU-RAY, and I own Castle and SG1 on DVD along with Farscape Peacekeeper wars. I long desperately to not own any DVD's ... No reason Castle and Farscape shouldn't have been HD

Yeah, it is that simple.

1) Better picture with higher resolution and better color (aka HDR)
2) Able to make use of my Dolby Atmos system.

I upgrade every blu ray I own. But, I will not spend more than $14.99 for an upgrade. So, I have no problem waiting for sales.

Well, there’s the fact that it’s been released in 4K and then there’s...nope, that’s pretty much it!

In order of priority.
  1. It's one of those movies I love so much that I couldn't live with myself if I don't get it in the best possible quality.
  2. If the Blu-Ray quality disappoints me, 4K is a no-brainer upgrade (except for T2).
  3. It comes with a totally new cut of the movie, or more extras, or something.
  4. It comes out in a Steelbook.
  5. For everything else that's a movie I generally like or enjoy, I'll keep an eye on deals.
  6. For everything beyond that, like movies I thought were good once but haven't seen since forever, I'll pass for now.

Since no one has mentioned mine, here is my thoughts on Upgrading from Blu-ray to UHD:

1. If it is an older Blu-ray that didn't come with a Digital copy for iTunes or Vudu.
2. If it is a favorite film of mine. (I will buy Aliens, Tombstone, Ironman, Jaws, Episode 4, Wall-E, and V for Vendetta on any new format)
3. It is on sale.

I don't have an HDR UHD TV, so that doesn't come into play yet, but the digital copy is important to me. All my movies are in binders until my littles are older and it is much easier to watch a 4K digital copy after the first time when I watch it on disk.

Pretty much this for me too. I don’t have much 4k discs but I have upgraded many movies I like that are available on 4k/UHD digital.

Another factor is if the movies I like are re-released on 4k steelbook(that I don’t have a steelbook for), like for example Alien 40th Anniversary , the Incredibles, The Little Mermaid.
