Default Component & HDMI

If I'm using HDMI from my cable box to my Plasma, do I need my S-Video cables connected from my receiver to my Plamsa also? I've unplugged them from my receiver just to see what happens and it doesn't seem to affect the signal at all. In other words, unplugging them doesn't affect the picture.
