The current US Blu-ray does look like garbage. Whether or not it's a badly shot film or a badly produced HD master, the fact is it needs a serious restoration and better treatment. Hopefully this release will not only remedy that but also come up with better artwork.

It's out. How does this compare to the region-free MGM release?

I just finished viewing the release. Our review will be up late tonight.
Unfortunately, the release is sourced from the older master that is in circulation. Pro-B |

Leaving Las Vegas Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() I think that this is a rather disappointing release. I was expecting a new remastering job, but this release is sourced from the old MGM master that is in circulation. It is certainly not a bad master, but it is a dated one and it shows. I have to admit that I am also a bit biased here because this is one of my all-time favorite films. I think that it is amongst the very best films from the '90s and I would like to have a definitive home video release. The release should be fine for UK members as the film was not available there on Blu-ray. (It also has some supplemental features that are not on the U.S. release). However, I hope that Criterion manage to bring a definitive release of Leaving Las Vegas in the U.S. If they do, they will also produce the type of supplemental features such a release deserves. ![]() ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 07-22-2016 at 07:19 AM. |

Leaving Las Vegas is not a film for the Blu-ray format; that is to say in terms of the finesse of AV that BD delivers this is film in HD is not a demonstrative positive aspect of what seasoned lovers of HD can expect. The transfer shows grain and is extremely hazy but this stems from its 16mm production roots, therefore its visuals do not radically benefit from its 1080P transfer. Colours are dull, image itself and at times lifeless, however, given what little Figgis has said about this film in the past can be construed that the end result is likely intentional. Consequently, it remains a BD with a weak looking image considering what the format is capable of. For those of us old enough to remember buying VHS and LD, this disc is the best Leaving Las Vegas is going to look on any home theatre and we should be grateful to have it, given previous releases on older formats looked worse, not to mention vital parts of the image were lost due to its presentation with an AR of 1.66:1. Anyone hoping for a pristine 4K release has no understanding of the film’s origin, or appreciation of current standards in terms of audio and PQ – or assumes, quite wrongly that throwing money at restorations to make then look like they were produced today, while possible, is not always desirable. |
