I was wondering why ratings are so different now? I was watching films like Jaws etc...and those type of films were rated PG but showed nudity and such. Now for a movie like that it has to be rated R. PG movies nowadays are so kiddish! Did they just change what each rating meant or what took place. I was shocked when I watched jaws again last week and it said PG!! Anyone knows the situation? Got Em!!

The ratings have fluctuated over time.
Midnight Cowboy was an NC-17 film when it came out. Now it would be an R rated film with little controversy over the rating. From what I've noticed, violence and language is more permissive under the newer ratings than they were before, but nudity and sexual content is more severly penalized. I find it very funny that films like The Chronicles of Narnia are considered PG films because their action scenes are bloodless. ![]() |

I ordered the Bourne Trilogy and Mission Impossible trilogy recently from Amazon.UK and was surprised to see Bourne had a 12 rating and MI had a 15 rating. In the US both are rated PG-13 the only thing I could think of is that the MI series has a little more visible blood as both are about the same violence/action and language wise.
As for the difference in ratings is that yes PG was a broader ratings group then than it is today. So anything from slightly edgy kids movies to more teen level movies with minor language and brief nudity in them. Which is why the first 3 Star Wars movies received PG ratings and the newer ones received PG-13 ratings. The G rating is also harder to get now as it is basically reserved for very kid friendly animated movies from Disney and such. It's almost impossible for a live action movie to get a G rating. |

just 5 years earlier there were no PG's or R's. 10 years before there was virtually no swearing or nudity. Today I think JAWS would get a pg-13 Spielbergs 80's summer flicks -- Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom and Gremlins were also interestingly enough the reason why the PG-13 rating came about.... |

but for the record-- the F word used in a sexual way is an automatic R the F-word used in a non-sexual way is okay once (PG-13) but if it's several times-- R again. Nudity in a comical way can be PG-13 Nudity in a sexual way almost guaranteed to be an R Last edited by AKORIS; 02-08-2010 at 09:00 PM. Reason: spell |

Spielberg proposed the PG-13 to the MPAA and I'm sure, since he produced the film, that he went and bribed them to give it the rating that he created with them. There's no way in hell that film should have been PG-13, no way.
I lived in Germany, and I liked their rating system; 0, 6, 12, 16, 18. If you weren't old enough, you had to GTFO! I LOVED IT! |
