Setting Naysayers Straight - Blu-ray Forum

It's hard to believe, but everywhere, people are still holding onto HD-DVD by a thread. So, naturally, I feel like we should bombard their websites with corrections to their stupidity.

I love the website/blog "Cinematical" and frequent it. It mostly covers only movie news, with director/actor interviews and things like that. But whenever they bring up "Blu-ray" or "HD-DVD", they are horribly misinformed. I try my best to immediately correct them, but I tire of doing so.

Here is THE LINK to their most recent biased post, telling you to by all means BUY an HD-DVD player now, while they are cheap. I tried to tell the poster he was insane, but he then agreed with me on that point

Please, help. Just don't spam their website. Speak the truth, tell them where they are wrong, don't start spamming and acting stupid. Like I said, Cinematical is a good website, but the one writer - Chris Campbell does not know what he is talking about. The website is owned by AOL/Time Warner by the way.

Also, post links below to other websites where people are misinformed about Hi-Def formats, so we can help each other correct their nonsense.

I'm not misinformed. I haven't been informed. And I'm not a naysayer.

I'm not biased, as I have no reason to be. And what does AOL/Time Warner have to do with it? Aren't you aware that Warner supports Blu-ray?

I also did not tell people to buy an HD DVD player BY ALL MEANS. I just said it's a good time to buy one really cheap, if you want to watch HD DVD movies for awhile until Blu-ray is cheaper.

I really don't care which is better. And you don't have to convince me. I'm not holding onto HD DVD by any thread. In fact, I only have a VCR and a DVD player, one that I just bought a few weeks ago for like $20 because my other was broken. But if I saw an HD DVD player for a buck and I could buy a favorite movie for another buck? Hey, that's the same as bus fare. Why not give it a try? It's going to be years before I make the Blu-ray switch anyway.

Why would anyone want to spend $1 on something obsolete just because it is cheap. After a couple of months no new movies will be available to HD DVD, and owners of the players will be stuck without titles to purchase.

Because a 1080p movie for $5 rather than $25 is worth it to a lot of people. Also, some people don't want to wait for certain titles to be re-released on Blu Ray.

If you get 50 titles you want on HD-DVD, and are NEVER able to buy another title (even though the used market will be huge) no-loss....

I only rent on HD DVD now, as I'm waiting for more news to be released with Paramount/Univ. but I don't think me being neutral (both Blu and HD DVD purchased within 2 days) was "Stupid", as I've enjoyed both. I always thought Blu-Ray was the better technology, and always hoped it would become the dominant format, but I enjoy Audio and Video 1st.... and I still buy standard DVDs occassionally (got two today, Tea-Leaf Green concert, and Zappa's Apostrophe) because I know they may NEVER be released on Blu.

Great response post, good of you to take the high road. All too often people lash out and you simply explained yourself. What a sad state that I am applauding this, but I am none-the-less.

I would recommend taking the leap to Blu though... There is such a difference in sound quality and picture quality over standard def DVD. Clearly you can choose how to spend your hard earned money, but I think you would quickly become as passionate as the rest of us if you gave it a shot! I hope you'll continue to post here! Welcome

With all due respect allow me to make a few points:

1. How could you recommend a player to someone when you personally do not own one?

2. If you do not care why invest time in promoting a product, intentionally or not?

3. To follow up on your own words...why not give it a try first and then continue on to recommending or not a certain product?

To sum it all up I personally find it quite ironic, to say the least, that someone who isn't and HDDVD owner is recommending HDDVD.

But I'm not necessarily recommending it, at least not in the terms you mean. I merely made a suggestion. I'm not urging anyone to buy it on the idea that I think it's a good product. First of all, I simply meant to put the idea out there about buying a cheap player now that people will be desperately trying to get rid of them. And other people have clearly agreed with my suggestion. I don't mean to promote HD DVD.

I can not agree with Mr. Campbell more. I read the link, too, and there is nothing misinformed or misinforming about it. If you want to watch HDDVD's that are currently available, knowing there will be nothing new, now may be the best time to buy, especially if you don't already have an upconverting DVD player.

ALTHOUGH, perhaps there should been a qualification that many of those 400 titles are already on BD, and most of the better ones that are not will follow soon, possibly with better audio.

I agree but i would wait until the players are $50 as Chris recommends (which maybe a few days away) and the buying and selling the disc's as an alternative to rental. Obviously its not a long term investment but a cheap way of viewing a few hundred HD films. Personally I want to buy to keep and HD-DVD is no good for that.

When I buy my HDM's, I would like to stick with one format for consistency's sake. But if that isn't that high of an issue with some people and those people can get an HD DVD player with like 50 movies for cheap, it might pay off in the long run. I see that lasting me for like almost two years. If the HD DVD player and 50 movies were cheap enough, maybe around two years time Blu-ray players and movies would have dropped such in price where they ended up paying less than if they had just went with Blu-ray in the first place.

The problem with anyone buying an hd-dvd player now is that it gives the impression that there is interest in the format. The best thing to do with hd-dvd is leave it well alone to hammer home the news that we want a single format; blu-ray.

Once a single format is established then the mass market consumer has an easy step to make when buying an hd player. It's simply a replacement for their DVD player but at the moment too many people are avoiding that purchase because there are still two options.

Leave HD-DVD alone, let it die a quick death.

The format is dead now. It's even been buried, all that's left is to throw the dirt on top of the casket. That will come, in extremely short order, with Toshiba's official announcement.

Having said that, I have no problem with anyone picking up a cheap HD-DVD player at this point in the game (post-game) as long as they are aware of all the facts. First and foremost, they are buying a dead format. Second, that production of players and (inevitably) software has stopped, meaning, if there's a mechanical problem with their player, they better hope it is reparable. If not, or if the repair cost is prohibitive, they've invested in a nice set of coasters individually housed in lovely red cases.

As long as people are aware that buying an HD-DVD player now, is barely more than buying a Sega Genesis or some such, then have at it. Just don't cry foul six months down the road... you were warned.

Seriously, though. To recommend a product that you don't own is arrogant, at best. If people want to jump to HDM now, there's no other recommendation than to get a ps3. If they want to wait, then wait for the panasonic bd-50 to come out. I can't make it any simpler than that.

Sure if the cheapest hd-dvd player is like $50 then yes by all means buy it. But buy it with the intetion of owning a DVD player not HD-DVD. Because it's just as cheap to buy a new DVD player. But to recommend HD-DVD as an HDM choice is blatantly wrong and foolish. I would feel sorry for the chap who took your advice.

I read his posts, and I understand what point he is trying to make (weather I agree with it or not). I think it was taken out of context, but at the same time I can see how easy it is to be taken out of context...

Chris, thank you for trying to clarify yourself. Appologies that you had to join this forum to defend yourself. Hopefully you stick around and join the world of Bluray. (or at least get an HDTV

The war is over. While misinformation on other forums bothered me a few months ago we can now move beyond it. Within 3-4 weeks anyone that has any interest in HD will know HD DVD is officially dead. The only holdouts will be the consumers who stupidly sunk thousands of dollars into HD DVD. It wouldn't surprise me if RDJAM(unless he was a paid shill) shows up in another couple of months under a different handle being a fanatic BD supporter. It's the nature of the beast.

How many HD-DVD players are out there? I don't know the exact numbers, because i never payed attention to them.

But, even if those people NEVER switched over, is it the biggest loss? We still have litterally Billions of other people on this Earth. Granted Billions of those Billions Can't Afford one, but still.
