Default Will region free Blu-ray last?

Some studios up till now have reframed from region coding there discs

But what with the format war about to end the industry will soon unite behind one standard for bluray

Will this mean the end to region free discs?

i doubt it, unless it's the case of a movie not yet released in EU, like in the case of what New Line does, there's no reason to add region coding on the discs. all it'd do is hinder sales.

in situations where they would use region coding, the other option is everyone get the titles late like the HD DVD delays vs Blu-ray for New Line titles like Hairspray. i dont see the demise of HD DVD changing policy on region coding.

For movies where one studio controls the distribution, it'll be region free or at least the disc will be delayed until all theatrical markets have been satisfied. Warner, SPHE and Disney are these studios.

For movies with mixed distribution, region coding still applies.

Well I hope they don't start putting more region coding on because I like having the option to buy some of my Blu from the US. For one they're cheaper than in the UK and you sometimes get better releases in the US. Take Bladerunner for example, in the US you can get the 5-disc set whereas in the UK only a 2 disc version is available. And the US version was still cheaper

I doupt it and especially for early adopters like me who is supporting the format.I have a region A PS3 and hope they will not reframed region coding.

I know sometimes i bought my titles from abroad ,but Sony titles in my country are region ABC ,hoping Sony will keep on this plan and not change it.

I believe FOX wants region code. Don't worry...region free code player will come to existence from the hardware side.

fox is the one studio that still have not learned that catering to customers' conveniences will yield more sales. they're the only studio using BD+ even tho it has so far been working as far as blocking mass pirate distribution, but not so good at player compatibility.

the reason why sony is moving toward TrueHD over PCM is so they can include more lossless soundtracks on the blu-ray so they can press 1 disc and ship all over. if they implement region coding i think it'd kind of kill that idea.

I have a feeling that more titles will be locked once Blu Ray becomes more established and flushed out. Weren't DVD's region free in its early days?

i think its onlya matter of time before its possible to have players region hacked, i for one wouldnt buy pirates or anything like that, as i like the collection side of blu rays and dvds as well as viewing the films, BUT if i could have my ps3 modded just so im able to play all regions of blu ray, then id pay whatever their asking. no questions. i wouldnt be pirating, i'd still pay for the movies, its just so that its possible to get any film i like, instead of seeing it available somewhere buti cant actually buy it due to region coding.

I loath region coding. I'm still ticked about my PS2. I wanted to get US games (legal ones) and the mod to allow you to play legal imported games was invasive and pretty expensive. Whereas you could get an external USB mod to allow you to play stolen pirate games. Just ludicrous. What message does that send?

Not really, the ones I remember were heavily region locked. If they weren't it's because of failure to understand the difference between a DVD and VHS in terms of region protection.

the message sent is, "the most consumer friendly version of the game is the illegally obtained one."

I think it will only be a matter of time before we will see Blu-ray-Live being used to allow subtitling in any (or almost any) major language of your choice. This would save disc space for PQ and AQ.

I hope industry insiders are reading this thread:

I doubt they will begin region coding the discs. It's just not logical to take a step back at this point.

Not necessarily use of region coding among current blu studios has been less than complete.

I wouldn't be supprised if it remains to be used in special situations where international theatrical releases haven't finished and or to prevent parallel importing in specific markets on specific titles
