Default Don Hertzfeldt - World of Tomorrow and It's Such a Beautiful Day Blu-ray

Don Hertzfeldt is one of my favorite modern filmmakers, being both an honest visionary and a startling storyteller. Now, after his works only being available Digitally and through DVD, he has a plan to bring WORLD OF TOMORROW and IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY on Blu-ray through Kickstarter.

Here's some quotes on his plans:

Quote:
hi everyone!

as an independent filmmaker, one of the challenges these days is simply figuring out *how* people want to watch your work. it turns out you can't just throw a VHS out there anymore and be done with it. we now find ourselves juggling theatrical tours, DVDs, downloads, netflix, itunes, vimeo, hulu, brain-to-brain uplinks, and more.

we've never released a bluray though and lately a lot of people have been asking for one... with the animated feature film IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY and the new short WORLD OF TOMORROW being the two most requested titles.
Quote:
with crowdfunding though, things get kind of interesting: we can make the bluray that everyone's been asking about but we'll only need to print as many copies as people sign up for... then we can ship them all out in one go and be done with it. it cuts out the long-term commitments for us with storage and distribution and puts a blu in your hands much sooner than otherwise possible.

this $ total approximates the minimum number of copies we'd like to produce and ship in order to make the production and remastering endeavor worth going through. we'd rather not make the disc at all until we're sure there's enough people actually interested in it. the blus will be authored by the same team in burbank who created our last few DVD releases and professionally replicated at a technicolor-affiliated lab. as usual, i'll personally oversee the remastering and color correction process.
The Blu-ray will also include a new interview, a teaser for a new secretive animation project by Don, and other goodies that can't be announced just yet.

More info is here.

Oh, and excuse the title mishap, maybe the mods can change it to this: "Don Hertzfeldt - World of Tomorrow and It's Such a Beautiful Day Blu-ray"

Only $20 to score a limited-run Blu-ray of some of the best animated films of the last 10 years? Um, yes, please.

I've only seen It's Such a Beautiful Day, and it was oddly remarkable. I'd be interested in backing this, for sure. I'll look at it when I get home. Thanks SD.

Here's hoping his earlier films can get included too so I can retire my old disc. No specific stretch goal though...

QFT. These are some of the most beautiful, tragic movies I've ever seen about the human condition, they just are delivered in such a deceptively simple, humorous style that a lot of people probably pass them by. I'd put them on a par with the likes of Synecdoche New York, they'll really rip your heart out.

Wow, I hadn't heard the name Don Hertzfeldt in a long while. I remember watching some of his animated shorts back in college over a a decade ago. One of his sketches really made me laugh so much I got tears, "My an*s is bleeding... FOR THE LONG OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY MY AN*S IS BLEEDING!"

Yeah...if you're looking for that you'll be disappointed, they have plenty of saw-edged humor but are really depressing and kinda profound. He matured A LOT since then.

I only discovered Rejected in the last year or two; I loved it, and its what made me take notice when I saw ISABD on Netflix, but ISABD totally blew me away and went way beyond all expectations I had when I said "Hey, the guy who did Rejected made a feature film, maybe I'll check it out"...

I wouldn't say you'll be disappointed at all; he still has the same amazing surreal sense of humour as he always did, his ambitions are just so much farther-reaching now, and it's an extremely well-observed and beautiful film as well.

"For the love of god and all that is holy, my anus is bleeding" is still my favourite Hertzfeldt quote though. I shout it to myself whenever my anus is bleeding. I hope Rejected makes it onto the blu-ray.

Since he's hitting goals to put more on the disc, 20 is probably good enough. I went for the 45 since I'm interested in the behind the scenes stuff on the old DVDs.

Oh dang, I didn't realize he'd actually started shipping. I live in Austin where he is so hopefully I've got mine sitting in the mailbox!

(Yes I know he said they're shipping them randomly but I am hoping)

I haven't been this ridiculously excited for a Kickstarter in quite awhile. Can't wait for it to arrive!

I'm in Austin as well, and didn't get mine today. No rush, but I can't wait.

I remember reading that he's shipping them out in random order, and he has to do it all by hand, so there's no real way to gauge. I'm also in Texas, by the way. Very excited for this!

He is probably shipping them by order of who backed the project.
