My god. Kurosawa in 4K.

The 4K restoration for Ran has exceptional detail and should benefit greatly from the 4K resolution... but the color grading... it's not bad, but far from optimal. I was hoping for Criterion to do their own BD release with better grading, but I'll take this UHD Day 1 for the resolution boost alone.

If any of Studio Canal's UHDs needed to be done by David M, it would be this one.

Why?

Studio Canal likes including lots of dubs for the regions they own a film, and they like to have them be lossless in nature. The remastered BD had Japanese stereo, 5.1, English 5.1, French 5.1 and German 2.0 all in lossless DTS-HD MA. That's a lot of audio tracks, and that eats up the bitrate.

But more important is the fact that the film is 161 minutes and is in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Due to being (almost) full screen, there is more information which has to be compressed than if it were in scope. Plus, the runtime- with over two and a half hours, even on a BD-100, it would present some trouble due to the number of battle scenes with lots of movement. It's not an overly dark film by nature (its cinematography), but the black levels on the remastered BD were kinda ass, so there's a good chance that many sequences will be a blocky Legovision mess.

Hopefully he does this. If not, we can only pray for the best.

Gonna get this!

One of my favorite Kurosawa’s. But Whenever I think of this movie I think of the Sidney Lumet quote.

"I once asked Akira Kurosawa why he had chosen to frame a shot in Ran in a particular way. His answer was that if he he'd panned the camera one inch to the left, the Sony factory would be sitting there exposed, and if he he'd panned an inch to the right, we would see the airport - neither of which belonged in a period movie. Only the person who's made the movie knows what goes into the decisions that result in any piece of work." (Sidney Lumet in Making Movies, 1995)

It's an interesting choice to be the first physical UHD outing for Kurosawa. Makes me wonder if there are others we'll hear about in the meantime.

It's one of the few Kurosawa movies owned by very UHD-friendly distributors e.g. StudioCanal in Europe, Sony/Uni in Australia. People tend to think that when one movie from a famed director gets an outing on 4K disc that it'll lead to some kind of 4K wave of the rest of their work, but as most directors' work is spread over a multitude of studios and rights holders it doesn't necessarily correlate.

Indeed. What I take from this is that Studiocanal might revisit some of their already existing 4K masters in the future. Mulholland Drive next year, please.
