In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the
German Expressionist film movement into history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a team of visionary designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. This authoritative edition presents the F. W. Murnau Stiftung’s meticulous 4K restoration of the film, with a new orchestral score by five-time Emmy®-winning composer Jeff Beal (House of Cards), which had its premiere performance at Carnegie Hall on June 3, 2024.

This is fantastic news.

I'll stick with the Blu-ray. I don't really watch the film enough to buy it again.

Same. Glad Kino is doing this though. Their blu ray was great, but ultimately when it comes to silent movies hard to beat Eureka.

Hopefully this will have DJ Spooky’s score from their Blu-ray, which I came to really appreciate. Yes, it’s unabashedly “modern,” but I think it fits the film really well, especially around the Halloween season.

After the Nic Cage movie, I've been clamoring this to get a 4K release. Glad KL listened and has decided to release it!

I hope it is fares against the FIM of the Eureka as well as TTSS did (meaning a wash). If I can get an A-friendly combo pack, all the better.

Sorry, dumb question here:

So is this Kino 4K release essentially the same thing as the Eureka 4K release, just without the swag? Or is Kino releasing something that could be different? (regarding just the quality of the film itself, not talking about any of the extras)

I pre-ordered the Eureka but now kind of tempted to cancel as I don’t feel I really need the limited, deluxe packaging, but really want to get the best quality in terms of the film itself on 4K.

Since Kino and Eureka used the same scan for their respective blu-rays, this will likely be based on that same scan from 2014. It'll come down to the encode most likely.

This will be intetesting...

Some early 1930's got 4K releases and some showed advantages over 1080p, specially the ones preserved in camera negative, like spanish Dracula, or in fine grain mastets, like The Mummy. Even the ones preserved in lavender film stock (not as good as fine grain) masters shot from camera negative, could have moments of advantage over the 1080p.

Most camera negative from Caligari survived, but it's at least 11 years older film emulsion and camera lenses than Universal 4K set.
