Different ps3 models - Blu-ray Forum

It has taken quite some time for sony to produce different models of the playstation 3 and while the variety is nice. I don't really see a point in having 4 different models to choose from. From launch time, we had the 60 and the 20 and everyone went for the 60. Then came the 80, which was like the 60 plus 20 extra gigs of hard drive space, a freebie game and less backwards compatiblity with older ps1 and ps2 games. Now we have the 40, with no backwards compatibility for ps2 games and I hear that it could be done with sofware emualation. My question is this, why even do that? It wouldn't make any sense to eliminate ps2 support from a ps3 and then add it in via software emulation. Sony calls the shots on different models, but I really think that we should only have a few models. Take the 80 out and have the 40 only support ps3 games. That would get the cost down more then at $399.99. Now there is a rumor that a 120 GB ps3 is in the works, but why add that to the lineup? It's nice to have variety, but I really think that sony needs to not have so many models to choose from. Going with software emulation is not a good idea because you can't get the list to be 100% complete, at least microsoft can't according to wikipedia.

There is not a large line up. There is the 40 and the 80. The 80 will be replaced with the 120.

I don't understand your concern, there's only ever two models at once and the differences are clearly identifiable.

The 20 and 60 no longer exist (from a SKU perspective, not being produced).

The 60 had the emotion engine in it (basically the PS2 inside as well as the PS3 architecture).

The 80 does support MOST PS2 games via emulation.

Some specific games cannot be emulated and will not be supported.

Currently the only SKU's are the 40 and 80.

As noted above, the 80 will be replaced with the 120 according to all the sources I have read.

Sony has stated they intend to only have 2 SKU's at any one time but that doesn't mean old inventory won't still be in the system. I bet you'd have a hard time finding a 20 and the 60's are getting rare. I'm tempted to buy another 60 before they completely disappear.

Sony has made several playstation 3 models. It's like "It just keeps changing." I hear on some website that Sony could bring the other models back from the dead. What do you get with the 120? It seems that Sony is not giving us enough time to get the model that we want. Why keep changing the models?

The PS2 emulation was only removed as the PS2 and PS2 'SOFTWARE' is still available..

Basically the consumer is a cheap skate every time given the opportunity - likewise they buy the cheapest 7th gen console the Wii in mass, and thus will always buy a PS2 version of a game to play on the PS3 if they can do so as it ofcourse cost less. So far PS3 games have sold little and if PS2 was no longer around there would have been higher sales. So it is Sony's own fault they can't have high sales on both PS2 & PS3 at the same time. Once the PS2 is removed only then do i see PS2 b/c returning.

I predict once the slimline PS3 is eventually available. (late 2009 or 2010).

As for a 120GB SKU this is only a cosmetic change, all that matters for mass PS3 adoption is a low enough price that everyone is willing to pay.

The only reason for the different SKUs so far has been primarily to save on manufacturing costs.

Too many rumors going around with the 120 GB ps3. Sony has an ace up their sleeve with something. If you took the 40 and got rid of the ps1 compability, then could you lower the price to $299.99? Sony is at the very top level with Nintendo at the very bottom and Microsoft right in the middle. Put home out and I think that everyone will sign up to be with Sony. We have a strong holiday lineup that includes Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo 5.
