Default Will PS3 output to 7.1?

I have an Onkyo 7.1 channel Receiver.. All the speakers have been tested to verify they work... The PS3 is connected to the Onkyo Receiver via HDMI and a TOS Link cable.. My question is can the PS3 support 7.1 Channel? Ive given up on Directv being able to do it at the moment, but Blu-Ray should be able to output sound to all speakers? Or am I just hoping for the future now? Also if it is possible any ideas on how to set it up on the PS3?

And yes this is a total newbie question, but I just cant figure it out so my pride is out the window

Why are you using a TOS Link cable instead of outputting the audio via the HDMI cable? Maybe this is the reason why you can't hear 7.1

This is your problem. Not enough bandwidth for the 7.1 Channel over Toslink. You need to have the HDMI only going to the Onkyo for 7.1. In the Onkyo setup, what ever you assign the PS3 to, assign the input to HDMI. The receiver should pic it up. Once you have the receiver looking for the sound, go to the PS3, setting ->Sound ->Audio output setting (PS Link) The PS3 should automatically recognize what your receiver will accept.

There are very few, if any, 7.1 pcm movies. crank is output 7.1 with the rear channel being a mono of the 6th channel.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info... I was told(again newbie stuff) that I needed the audio cables.. They were like $6 each so I picked them up.. I will try disconnecting them and re-assigning the audio to HDMI...

My Vizio is an early model and only has DVI.. so I have an HDMI to DVI cable running from my reciever to my tv... This shouldnt matter though since all the sound is controlled through the receiver correct?

That is correct, especially since you would probably want to take advantage of the advanced audio with the BD and use your PS3 anyway. Glad we could help.

I do not have a Onkyo so here is the faq for all the major amps, just look for the faq to which one you have and do a search within the amp forum for PS3: but check the Faq section for your amp at

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=90

Also, even if the source is not 7.1, you can overlay Dolby Pllx over what ever source you are getting (MPCM + dolby PIIx) and you will be able to upmix any non 7.1 source to 7.1 so you will hear it through all speakers, since not all games or movie are pure 7.1, put with the overlay/upmix you can get all speakers to come on even if the source is not 7.1, even for your DirectTV.

Depends on the Onkyo he has. Not all of them can overlay PCM.

Also depends on the source stream and the Onkyo. My personal preference has been, even though my receiver cannot overlay PCM from 5.1 to 7.1, that PCM 5.1 is as the director intended, so I figured it should be good enough for me to accept. I have never been disappointed with 5.1 PCM, though 7.1 PCM from RFOM is awesome and 6.1PCM from Crank was sweet.

Just experiment. Just because you can doesn't always mean you should.

I have :

Onkyo HT-SR800

It does appear to let me assign audio to HDMI on the receiver or am I just dumb?

I meant... It does not appear to let me assign audio to HDMI on the receiver.. On the PS3 it shows as no connection when I try to select HDMI audio. When I select the TOS Link option on the PS3 it gives me the audio option...

the onkyo sr800 is hdmi passthrough, so you will only get surround with the optical. Sorry.

"HDMI Inputs/Output: This unit has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI monitor output. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The monitor output sends the HDMI signal to your display just as it's received (pass-through), but the receiver cannot decode the audio signal via the HDMI input so a separate optical digital, coaxial digital, or analog stereo cable must also be used."

sorry, you cannot get true 7.1 with an optical cable.

BUT...

your receiver does however have 7.1 Multichannel Analog inputs! So you would need a bluray player (PS3 cannot) that has multichannel analog outputs...say like the Panasonic DMP-BD10AK. If you go the Multichannel Analog route...be sure it has Internal decoding of HD formats, as your receiver cannot decode these so bitstreaming them is not an option...

so its either:

A. Keep the PS3 and buy a standalone with multichannel analog
B. Sell the PS3 and buy a standalone with multichannel analog
C. Just accept you will never have Lossless Audio
D. Get a new HDMI Receiver

I'd go with D.

If you can swing it, I would recommend this one too. It is the step up model from my 674. Pretty much the same receiver except TrueHD/ DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, video upconversion, 1.3 compliant and 90w/channel. It will future proof your stuff, and allow you to get the most out of your PS3 right now.

Yes, it does. I hear all the sounds through all seven speakers. Just play with the different audio settings.
