Default Buying a bluray player online; is it worth the risk?

Buying locally gives you the option of a speedy return if the player doesn't work out of the box or break later on but I'd much prefer to order from Newegg and not just because it's cheaper.

I guess it's a calculated risk.

Default Best Buy

First, I feel it is easily worth it.

Additionally, I live in a small town and bought my LG HD TV on line from Best Buy. Very happy.

Along with the manufacturer warranty, you can still purchase the extended warranty. Some states directly from Best Buy over the internet. Other states, you have at least a month to go to a Best Buy and add the purchase of the extended warranty.

Buy a Blu ray player from Best Buy they will deliver to your door and set it up for you.

I'd be ordering from Newegg, I think, so if my player ever broke, I'd have to mail it somewhere instead of just carting it back to a local retailer.

No matter, I'm probably going to do it anyway.

Personally I would never get High Tech stuff online, you don't choose the pack they give you and you don't know how they treat it on it's way to your place. Even if you get protections with guarantees and stuff, it's always annoying to have to fill papers, explain, send it back and wait for another one hoping this other one is fine ...

In stores I get to choose the pack among those in the aisle and if they look tampered with I either take the non tampered pack or just go to another store.

But that's just me

If you buy from an online store versus craigslist, ebay etc, at least you have the protection of a place to return it to. Even then, I purchased a Sony Receiver on ebay for just under $1000 and, it is one with known firmware issues. Sony was still willing to service the unit if necessary without charge. It was sold as new and still comes with a warranty card. I wouldn't see the big deal of purchasing a blu-ray player online. You generally can find better prices as well.

I do that with any purchase I make (including food).

The upside is, if you purchase the product online, it is highly unlikely the package is going to be tampered with. When you go into big-box stores, it's usually customers who open and mess with the product. Since most online retailers work from a warehouse, you wont have any of that. I have bought many little purchases online and have never had a problem.

I am a little nervous to order my surround sound system online, though.
