I know how it is to want 5.1 (NOW DAMNIT!!!) with as little cost as possible, but ask yourself this: In 1-2 years from now, do you think that you will be truly happy spending $300.00 on a HTIB? Will you just crave more, making your $300.00 a waste?
Others have posted before, and I agree wholeheartedly after my own 5.1 audio 'quest', that you will be FAR better served by piecing a nice HT together a little at a time. In the end, you will have a very nice system that will end up lasting you for years to come, and satisfying you along the way. You say your top end budget is $300.00 for now for speakers, and you can get a receiver later. Here is my personal suggestion to you: 1) Purchase a nice pair of speakers (yes, only 2). Consider these: http://www.axiomaudio.com/m3ti_main.html for example. They are very nice. FAR better than what you will end up with if you spread out your $300.00 over the entire 5.1 set. Even if you can't spend the extra $30.00 for this pair, there is another set with 5.25 mid-woofer for under $300.00. 2) Save up and get the Onkyo 605 that you were talking about. That will most likely set you back another $400.00 or so. Now you have a very nice receiver and a very nice set of mains. Next, I would recommend this: http://www.axiomaudio.com/vp100_main.html for another $255.00 for the center speaker. Next comes the subwoofer and surrounds. You get the general idea? Piece by piece, and in the end, you could have a very nice HT. Something that you will be satisfied with for a long time. I myself have Axiom speakers, and there are others by Klipsch and Definitive Technology that could defintiely also suit a nice HT setup if you prefer. Speaking from my own experiences, Axiom makes very fine speakers. BTW, I am not trying to bash you for having a budget and wanting HT. I just know that my first go-round was with the cheapest thing I could get, and in the end I just got tired of it and bought more. If I had followed this advice, I would have SAVED myself almost $600.00 on equipment that I find very mediocre at best. Good luck with your HT! I hope that you find something that you like. |

For what it's worth, I spent a little over $3,000 on speakers/receiver without any real research etc. when I first got into college...... Now I have big wall-shaking monstrosities that sit in my basement and are used occassionally when someone wants to list to music while shooting a game of pool, and I'd get rid of them, but they aren't worth more than $300 to anyone......
So... Moral of the story is, if you buy quality (even a little at a time) the first time around, you'll get enjoyment for a LOT LONGER and it'll keep you from spending far more money down the road...... I know there are speakers made back then (11-12 years ago) that would have killed the low quality junk I bought..... |

you could go with something like this http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HT-SS2000-Blu-ray-Matching-Component/dp/B000OG6I24/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=12067207 38&sr=8-1
or get http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Synerg...6720801&sr=1-2 http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR605...6720971&sr=1-3 http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Synerg...6721015&sr=8-6 but i would recommend a couple of these http://www.amazon.com/NHT-N-AZB-Abso...6721083&sr=1-1 and then this http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR605...6720971&sr=1-3 then slowly add a center, surrounds and a sub as you can |

I've been looking in a similar price range. I plan to get the Onkyo 605 soon and was looking at their SKS-HT240 surround speaker package which gets a high rank at CNET.
I'd be interested to hear any feedback about this set-up from the Forum, as well as feedback on CNET in general as a reliable A/V resource. Cheers! |

I think you should listen to Skulltap and Beta Man, Start slow and build over time. I would love to have my whole setup now, but I can only afford to start with a pair of Paradigm Monitor 7's (which I to wait till may to afford them!!) and then build from there. I know in the end, I will be happy and have a quality setup.
