Default Hi, Im new and have a question.

Hello, I have been reading here for a lil bit and decided to sign up. I like Blu Ray and HDDVD but tend to favor Blu Ray due to better titles and better tech. I have a few questions.

First where would be the best place for me to get up to date CES information regarding Blu Ray.

Second do you guys think Blu Ray is getting and unfair rap in the media and why the heck is it happening. I see it happening and dont understand why.

I hope I have not broken any rules with my first post. Nice site.

^^ Nice first post.

I'd direct you to keep an eye on our home page, www.blu-ray.com, for starters.

I know we have a few regulars here that are probably at CES, so I'd be keeping an eye out for any CES related threads starting tomorrow or so.

Enjoy the forum!

I think the best place for unbiased CES coverage would be a range of tech websites and blogs, try The Register a UK based site or ArsTechnica, or Engadget for some lovely biased reporting.

As to why BD keeps getting slammed in the media, easy, MS has more $$$ than Sony, they can pay news outlets/newspapers/magazines to report HD DVD favourably.

Welcome to the forum. You've already demonstrated a keen sense of awareness. The press has indeed promoted HD-DVD and at the same time given Blu-Ray less than it's due.

This happens because HD-DVD has a better propaganda machine than Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray has tended to depend on it's superior concept, while HD-DVD has spent a lot of money getting press using paid propagandists.

One of the best in the business is a fellow named Rob Enderle. He gets paid by Toshiba and others in the HD-DVD camp to place stories favorable to HD-DVD. Some are downright laughable, but he's good at what he does. The press is downright lazy and laps these free stories up like a cat laps up milk.

On the other hand, Blu-Ray does not appear to have taken this route. They seem to have depended on a superior product and extensive studio and hardware support.

Which one of these approaches works best will be demonstrated in the long term results.

It seems the BR camp should at least try to counter this crap. I know they have far more support, and tech wise they are better, although I have always believed most consumers (MOST) dont read up on tech like you and I, the just ask the kid at best buy. I just want one standard. It doesnt matter to me which, although if it were MY choice I would choose Blu Ray, I mean why not choose the option with the obvious advantage. (tech wise)

I still think Sony can win this war by using the potential of the brand power they have, and the supporters have. For example; Sony, Panasonic and Apple are all far sexier than the likes of Toshiba, NEC and Sanyo are. Joe Public still has a very large amount of respect for Sony (and mostly, Sony probably deserve it).

I firmly believe this "war" is Sony's to give away. Sony and Blu-ray SHOULD be far too powerful to compete with if they get it right. I mean, in March when Casino Royale is released... a marketing compaign including a Sony Vaio, Blu-ray player, Bravia X series and James Bond all in the same ad? Man, it wouldn't get any cooler than that.

(Fingers crossed. My Panasonic BD10 cost me a fortune )

Right you are. Most consumers have trouble reading anything more complicated than the price sticker.

What i find funny is you walk into any major store, and they have Blu-Ray displays everywhere and not a SINGLE hd-dvd display, sign, advertisement anywhere. Everyone is pushing blu-ray. How can a format exist if no one knows its alive? I've said it many times, hd-dvd lives on AVS Forum. In the retail market, you know, where the actual sales happen, hd-dvd is dead as can be. I wouldnt be shocked to see pics from toshibas press conference with one of the reps wearing a "click here to petition studios for hd-dvd!" shirt.

I have noticed this as well. Why does AVS forums like it so much. I have alot of respect for alot of those guys, but I cannot figure out why they want the lesser of the two to win. Oh and as far as what I mean by "I have noticed that as well" is that Blu Ray is everywhere. Well I live in a poduck redneck town (Im a redneck, gotta love em) and Best Buy has little of both but Circuit City has a big Blu Ray thing going.
