Default HD-DVD coming out with 51 GB Disk!

Toshiba Plans New Version
Of Big-Capacity HD DVD
By SARAH MCBRIDE
January 9, 2007

Toshiba Corp. is working on a large-capacity version of HD DVD that could give it a leg up in the battle over high-definition DVDs, the company announced Sunday night at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Also, Sony Corp. said its base of PlayStation 3 users gives its rival high-definition technology called Blu-ray the advantage over HD DVD.

HD DVD and Blu-ray are battling to become the dominant format as consumers migrate to high-definition technology. Both formats hit the market last year.

Toshiba's plans call for a HD DVD disc with a 51-gigabyte capacity, compared with 30 gigabytes for HD DVD and 50 gigabytes for Blu-ray.

Toshiba planned to submit the specifications to an industry body later this year so they could be included in the HD DVD standard, said Warren Lieberfarb, a Toshiba consultant.

Sony told CES conference-goers that in a survey of more than 10,000 PS3 owners, more than 80% of respondents indicated that they planned to purchase Blu-ray movies for their PS3 gaming devices, and about 75% said their PS3 would be a primary device for watching movies.
