The codec allows the PS3's decoder to downmix 7.1 tracks to 5.1. But PS3 should only do this when it detects a receiver that can only do 5.1. So PS3 fails to detect the receiver's 7.1 capability and wrongly downmixes it to 5.1. That's why PS3 is saying 7.1 while your receiver says 5.1. The New Line's main movie uses this channel remapping technique. But the New Line HD logo at the beginning of the disc don't, that's why you're getting 7.1 on your receiver. Meaning even if your receiver is 5.1, PS3 will not downmix the audio. It's up to the receiver to downmix, but to the receiver's own standard, not to the intended map by the decoder. So what is he saying?
The 'Limited' logo means that PS3 will decode 7.1 and put it out as 5.1 when the type of encoding that New Line is using was used? That means Sony knew about it and it was the limitation within the decoding software used and was implied by the 'Limited' logo... That in turn implies it's not a bug???? This thing is getting really confusing really fast.. |

DTS HDMA has SEVEN different 7.1 configurations that can be used in both the mixing stage and decoding stage. But the number of 7.1 releases as compared to Fox's DTS HDMA releases is not that big. It's a minor annoyance (still annoyance) but at least you get to listen to lossless in 5.1. Users with BD players that have DTS HDMA bitstreaming have had similar problems, mostly due to how the receivers are decoding this stream. The point is not that I don't want the PS3 to solve all of these minor problems; it's that even now, we're at the early adopter stage where SCE and receiver manufacturers are experiencing growing pains. So enjoy your discs and keep an eye out for new PS3 firmware announcements. ![]() fuad |

Sometimes giving too much flexibility and choice is not a good thing. People get confused. I hope they'll fix this issue soon before New Line issues LOTR in 7.1 DTS HDMA. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() fuad |

I think it's funny how picky people are being about all of this.
It'll get worked out! Really, in this day and age, we should all be amazed that we can get this out of a machine costing as little as $350 in some countries. Sometimes I feel like former HD-DVD zealots cling to any anti-PS3 argument just to save face in the wake of losing the war. |

I read about people on HDD and AVS doing this, and it was just sending out silence to the 6th and 7th speakers, so it doesn't work with some. I suspect people who thinks it does work either forgot to put their ear to the speaker or the speaker was still matrixing.
Don't worry, an fix from Sony will come. They may not have known about this problem since it's limited to a few discs. |
