Default 7.1 issue update

I got this from avs, im guessing he's from dts by the looks of his name

The titles in question were encoded with embedded channel remapping coefficients, only present on those few titles. The DTS-HD codec is very flexible and provides a unique way of telling the decoder how to downmix to 5.1, specific to the 7.1 layout used when mixing took place. The goal is to make sure the 5.1 listening experience stays true to the original 7.1 mix. There were a few titles encoded in this unique way – that are perfectly valid (and do sound phenomenal). The issue at hand is specific to the system, hence the "DTS-HD Master Audio | Limited" logo. As to the next logical question, I’ll apologize in advance and say that it is not my place to comment on future PS3 firmware updates.

There are numerous other DTS-HD MA 7.1 titles out there that use standard downmixing coefficients, which do output at 7.1.
I hope this helps and that you enjoy!

Kind regards.

PS- I’m out of town, so I’m jealous you all updated your PS3s before I did ;-)
so does this mean its not a ps3 issue? its dts?. the way they have it set up on some movie's(new line) http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...1#post13652558

It's still PS3.

The codec allows the PS3's decoder to downmix 7.1 tracks to 5.1. But PS3 should only do this when it detects a receiver that can only do 5.1.

So PS3 fails to detect the receiver's 7.1 capability and wrongly downmixes it to 5.1. That's why PS3 is saying 7.1 while your receiver says 5.1. The New Line's main movie uses this channel remapping technique.

But the New Line HD logo at the beginning of the disc don't, that's why you're getting 7.1 on your receiver. Meaning even if your receiver is 5.1, PS3 will not downmix the audio. It's up to the receiver to downmix, but to the receiver's own standard, not to the intended map by the decoder.

1. I did not say never (think real hard about how the PS3 works). I said - I can not comment.
2. Only a handful of 7.1 titles decode and output as 5.1 lossless DTS-HD MA on the PS3.
3. All other 7.1 titles have no issues decoding 7.1 lossless DTS-HD MA on the PS3.

hugh/saprano - your posts are great examples of why I seldom participate on forums.

I was just trying to help ;-)
i think he just gave an hint about an update........i hope.

So what is he saying?

The 'Limited' logo means that PS3 will decode 7.1 and put it out as 5.1 when the type of encoding that New Line is using was used?

That means Sony knew about it and it was the limitation within the decoding software used and was implied by the 'Limited' logo...

That in turn implies it's not a bug????

This thing is getting really confusing really fast..

Exactly how did they make it worse?

DTS HDMA has SEVEN different 7.1 configurations that can be used in both the mixing stage and decoding stage. But the number of 7.1 releases as compared to Fox's DTS HDMA releases is not that big. It's a minor annoyance (still annoyance) but at least you get to listen to lossless in 5.1.

Users with BD players that have DTS HDMA bitstreaming have had similar problems, mostly due to how the receivers are decoding this stream. The point is not that I don't want the PS3 to solve all of these minor problems; it's that even now, we're at the early adopter stage where SCE and receiver manufacturers are experiencing growing pains.

So enjoy your discs and keep an eye out for new PS3 firmware announcements. Enjoy the moment! Live it!

I understand what your saying, but what i ment buy made it worse is nobody would be getting upset and going crazy( maby a little but not like it is now) if they let it be known before the update.

The "Limited" logo only means that we can't manually configure the channel remapping ourself. The PS3 decoder will do it for you, but that's where the problem is, the PS3's DTS channel remapping is buggy.

So it is a bug. Expect a fix soon.

or you can do this

Would you people with 7.1 setups and those "special" NL titles try to uncheck all audio outputs except 7.1 in your PS3 audio settings and try the movie out and report back your results including your receiver? Maybe the PS3 will be forced to properly decode 7.1 then.

I knew about that, and yes it works. But you don't have to uncheck all, just the 5.1 PCM frequencies only.

But then you have to set it back to automatic to enjoy all other 5.1 titles!

Question to you (no sarky): does your receiver manual tell you about the 7 ways in which a DTS HDMA bitstream can be decoded by it?

Sometimes giving too much flexibility and choice is not a good thing. People get confused. I hope they'll fix this issue soon before New Line issues LOTR in 7.1 DTS HDMA. Playing that at reference level will make you shit in your pants and bring tears in your ears but not at the same time.

I think it's funny how picky people are being about all of this.

It'll get worked out!

Really, in this day and age, we should all be amazed that we can get this out of a machine costing as little as $350 in some countries.

Sometimes I feel like former HD-DVD zealots cling to any anti-PS3 argument just to save face in the wake of losing the war.

Don't worry, an fix from Sony will come. They may not have known about this problem since it's limited to a few discs.

Nobody is worried, and nobody's complaining. I'm confident that we'll get a fix soon.

We're only discussing the issue here. I'm sure everybody learned something from this discussion.
